Bundi ( Hindi बूंदी Būndī ) is a large city (since 2012 Municipal Corporation ) with around 105,000 inhabitants in the Indian state of Rajasthan . Bundi is the administrative seat of the district of the same name and was the capital of the Princely State of Bundi, which existed until 1949 .

Bundi is located in a valley of the Aravalli Mountains in southeast Rajasthan at an altitude of about 265 m above sea level. d. M .; the cities of Kota and Chittorgarh are about 38 km (driving distance) southeast and 153 km southwest, respectively. The climate is mostly dry and warm; Rain falls almost exclusively during the summer monsoon months .

A good 74% of the population are Hindus , around 21.5% are Muslims , a good 3% are Jains and just under 1% are Sikhs ; Buddhism and Christianity hardly play a role. As is common in northern India, the male population is around 10% higher than the female.
economy
Bundi is the handicraft and commercial center of an agricultural area. Since the 1970s, the service sector and tourism have also played a certain role in the city's economic life.
history
Like many other regions of Rajasthan and northern India, Bundi had been an independent princely state since 1342 , which was also treated as such by the British , even though they established a protectorate in 1818 . Two years after India's independence (1947), the last ruling Maharao Shri Bahadur Singh gave up the autonomy of Bundi and joined his small empire to the newly founded 'Indian Union'.
Attractions
- The Taragarh Fort was built on the plateau of a hill and is secured by three gates ( Lakshmi Pol , Phuta Darwaza and Gagudi ki Phatak ). The rock is hollowed out by passages; there are also several water reservoirs.
- Located on the hillside and built between 1607 and 1631, but later expanded, Garh Palace contains numerous frescoes from the 17th to 19th centuries with themes from mythology as well as the history of the city and life at court. A balcony offers spectacular views over Naval Sagar Lake and the city. The numerous paintings in the Palace form the templates for the so-called Bundi-Art, an artistic silk painting .
- Chogan Pol , built with echoes of the Mughal style , marks the border with the city's bustling bazaar area .
- The Raniji Ki Baori , built in 1699 by order of Rani Nathavat Ji , one of the wives of the Maharaoh at the time, is one of the most important stepwells in Rajasthan with its 46 m depth . It is built in the Indo-Islamic style .
- Two other stepwells from the 1870s are grouped under the name Nagar Saga Kund and are located near Chogan Gate .
- The once around 50 step wells and tanks have mostly been filled up; Worth mentioning is Dabhai Kund , who comes up with beautiful stone carvings.
- Chaurasi Khambon ki Chhatri , located in the south of the city, is one of the most beautiful memorial buildings in India; it has a total of 84 pillars and was erected in 1683 in honor of one of the Maharaja's stepbrothers.
- Jait Sagar Lake , about 2 km north of the city, is of natural origin; however, it was enlarged by human hands. At its southern end are the cenotaphs ( chhatris ) of 66 members of the ruling family.
