The castle Elmendorf , also Elmendorfer castle or three-Hill Motte called, is an Outbound Turmhügelburg (Motte) in the nature reserve Dreibergen on the north bank of the Zwischenahner sea at Elmendorf , a district of Bad Zwischenahn in Ammerland in Lower Saxony .
history
The castle complex, which was probably founded in the 9th century, was in the 12th century after being destroyed and rebuilt in the possession of Count Egilmar I , first mentioned in 1091 , an ancestor of the House of Oldenburg . The Lords of Elmendorff sat in the castle as ministerials , a Diederich von Elmendorpe is mentioned as a witness in a document from the Rastede monastery in 1287 . At the end of the 13th century the castle fell into disrepair and burned down in the 14th century.
Contrary to the earlier assumption that the three hills were burial mounds from early barrows , excavations by the archaeologist Dieter Zoller between 1966 and 1968 revealed that it was a moth complex , in the middle of the 12th century the Counts of Elmendorf sat.
Other excavation findings point to a tower mound with a twelve-sided residential tower , a castle mound with a square timber structure and half-timbered building with a cellar, and a bailey mound with a courtyard, main and ancillary buildings.
The first western hill of the three-hill moth has a diameter of about 50-55 meters and is seven meters high. The second eastern hill has a diameter of about 35-45 meters and is five meters high. The entire facility takes up an area of around 1.2 hectares . The former ten meter high keep had a floor area of 10 by 10.5 meters.
The castle chapel " St. Bartholomäus " , consecrated by Archbishop Siwar in 1134, was located between the castle hills and the Zwischenahner Meer .
