Elmstein Castle

The elmstein castle is the ruin of a high medieval Spur castle on a 290 meter high mountain spur on the northern side of the Speyerbach valley in the Palatinate Forest above the village Elmstein in the district of Bad Dürkheim in Rhineland-Palatinate .

history

The castle complex was probably built before the 13th century as a palatinate castle to secure the valley path. The feudal people held the office of taverns . The castle was owned by the Electorate of the Palatinate . The lower mantle wall was built between 1220 and 1230. In 1329, Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian left the castle to his cousin from the Palatinate. From 1419 to 1437 the castle is owned by Count Johann V von Sponheim as a feudal feud from the Palatinate . In 1466, Elector Friedrich I pledged the castle to Erhard von Remchingen . In 1513, when the ownership situation changed, Heinrich von Pagk received the castle as a fief. During the Peasants' War (1525), Elmstein Castle was damaged. Count Palatine Johann Casimir inherits the castle in 1576. The castle was also damaged in the Thirty Years' War (1648). In 1689 it was finally destroyed in the Palatinate War of Succession, after which the castle passed into private ownership.
