The castle Pusignan is a medieval fortress , built in the 12th century on the ruins of a Roman camp. Its ruins form the most important architectural monument in the French community of Pusignan in the Rhône department .

history

The Roman fortification dates from the time of the conquest of Gaul by the Romans under Julius Caesar . It was on the road from Roman Lugdunum to Cremiacum . After the collapse of the Roman Empire , Pusignan was part of the Burgundian settlement area . In the early Middle Ages , a moth with simple wooden buildings was built in the area of the former Roman camp .

In the 12th century, the Lords of Moifond, a regional noble family, began building a larger castle . The stone-built complex had a wide curtain wall .

In 1430 the castle of Pusignan was the scene of a military conflict. The Battle of Anthon was a significant event in the conflict between the Dauphiné and the Prince of Orange , Louis de Chalon . He wanted to bring the two gentlemen together and to take the areas in between on the Rhone . Pusignan Castle received an orange crew. The governor of the Dauphiné , Raoul de Gaucourt , wanted to recapture the place and hired the militant Rodrigue de Villandrando . With his reinforcement, the Dauphiné troops retook several castles in the region and pitched their camp on June 7, 1430 in front of Pusignan Castle. The fortress fell into their hands on June 9th. Two days later, the army of Ludwig von Cahlon was ambushed between Anthon and Colombier-Saugnieu and was put to flight by the much smaller contingent from the Dauphiné. Many refugees are said to have drowned in the Rhône. King Charles VII moved in Pusignan Castle and then lent it to Rodriguez von Villandrando.

In 1450, Aymar von Poisieu, a former follower of Joan of Arc , bought the castle. As the confidante of the Dauphin and later King of France Louis XI. he brokered, among other things, his marriage to Charlotte of Savoy .

The later lords of Pusignan held high positions in the royal army several times. In 1679 the king raised the rule to the rank of margraviate . In the 18th century, Pusignan changed hands several times. On July 29, 1789, revolutionaries from the Dauphiné and farmers from the area looted and burned the complex.
