occupation

Taufers Castle (South Tyrol) formed the backdrop for Schreckenstein Castle. Other locations were Schloss Tüßling (as a boarding school for girls, Schloss Rosenfels) and Kraiburg am Inn .

Burg Schreckenstein is the title of a German children's film based on the books in the children's book series of the same name by Oliver Hassencamp . Shooting started in autumn 2015, and the cinema release took place on October 20, 2016. The film was awarded the title valuable by the German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden.

action

Eleven-year-old Stephan is an outsider when he comes to the Burg Schreckenstein boarding school . There he becomes part of the school community and participates in the pranks that the boys play on the girls from the neighboring boarding school at Schloss Rosenfels. But one of the pranks has unexpected consequences: Suddenly, the girls' school has to temporarily move to the castle, which leads to conflicts between the two headmasters in view of the now required coexistence of a strictly run girls' school and a much more liberal boys' school. At the annual castle festival, at which the residents of Schreckenstein Castle reenact life in 1783, the students from Schreckenstein Castle now also take part in the students from Rosenfels Castle.

Differences to the template

The film combines plot elements from different books in the series. Stephen's arrival at the castle is the central theme of the first volume, Die Jungens von Burg Schreckenstein , the girls' boarding school at Schloss Rosenfels is first mentioned in volume 2, and the motif of the girls moving to the castle can be found in volume 9, Conspiracy at Burg Schreckenstein .

Compared to the books, some figures have been renamed, combined and / or added. The names of several prominent figures in the book series are missing from the cast list; conversely, the names of some film characters do not appear in the template. Stephen's eternal rival Steamroller, described in the book as "a muscleman with a sparrow's brain", is played in the film by a black boy who doesn't seem particularly strong or particularly stupid.

Children in both schools wear school uniforms . There is no mention of such uniforms in the book series. In keeping with the zeitgeist, computers and cell phones that do not appear in the books are part of everyday life in the cinematic implementation.

The central element of the book series is the boys' self-chosen code of honor to behave in a “chivalrous” manner following their role models, which is why they call themselves knights , for which outsiders often show disbelief, malice and ridicule. The motto often quoted in the book templates “I want to be afraid of the horror / always be fair and honest” appears once in the film, Henning Baum, as headmaster, inquires with the boys what actually happened with it. The boys call themselves the Schreckies and behave, especially during the pranks, far less respectful and virtuous.
