Burgstall Schönstein

The Burgstall Schönstein , also called Schönstheim , is a defunct Niederungsburg in the Schönstheimer Wald about 1820 meters northeast of the church in Strüth , a current district of Röttingen in the district of Würzburg in Bavaria . The forest is located between Riedenheim , Oberhausen , Strüth and Röttingen near today's state road 2268.

history

The castle was first mentioned in 1295 with the abandoned village of Dippach (Diepach, Dipbach and Schönstheim ), a place with 16 farms. In 1345 the castle from the estate of Count Kraft II. Von Hohenlohe-Weikersheim was sold with parts of the village to the diocese of Würzburg and afterwards it was presumably no longer inhabited or only used for a short time. From 1467 the place was no longer inhabited due to the chaos of the war and the population settled in Riedenheim and Röttingen. The castle began to fall into disrepair and in 1467 was only mentioned as a castle stable in documents . In the following years, probably u. a. operated a brickworks .

description

Overgrown piles of stones and clearly visible remains of the moat are evidence of the castle complex, which is located on a spur-like slope on a 30 by 40 meter castle plateau, surrounded by a 20 meter wide and 3 meter deep ring moat. To the west there was a neck ditch 120 meters long, 10 meters wide and 4 meters deep to protect against the rising terrain . There is an information board next to the castle.

Schlossbrunnengraben

At the edge of the castle site and the former village is the enclosed spring (castle fountain) of the Rippach with the year 1588. The course of the castle fountain ditch leads one kilometer to the state road 2268. The village and castle residents probably got their water from a previous building of this well .

Community of Schönstheim

Although the village of Schönstheim (Dorf Dippach) has not existed for over 500 years, a mayor is still elected on May 2nd every year. Schönstheim owns land, which is why it still exists as a forest corporation. With the proceeds from the forest and hunting industries, the network of trails is essentially maintained and expanded. There were once 16 farms with a total of 301 hectares of forest. The representatives of these owners' associations form the community of Schönstheim .
