The moated castle (also called Zobelschloss ) in Giebelstadt , a market in the Lower Franconian district of Würzburg ( Bavaria ), was originally built in the 14th century. The moated castle at Mergentheimer Straße 2 is a protected monument .

description

The two-storey four-wing complex with corner towers built for the Barons Zobel zu Giebelstadt is essentially from the 14th century. After being destroyed in the Peasants' War in 1545, the complex was rebuilt between 1581 and 1585. Above the portal of the gatehouse in the Renaissance style there is a relief with the alliance coat of arms of the Zobel / Truchseß, which is said to come from Jörg Riemenschneider . The entrance to the chapel in the inner courtyard is adorned with an alliance coat of arms of the Zobel / Greiffenclau and the entrance to the stairwell is adorned with an alliance coat of arms of the Zobel / Bibra.

Inside the castle we find the ancestral hall, the library, the red and blue salon, the dining room and the chapel, which is equipped with a baroque altar . The entire inventory was auctioned in 2002. The moated castle is currently (2014) empty and cannot be visited.
