history

The castle was founded around 1170–80 by the lords of Falkenberg, feudal men of the lords of Ravensburg , a Würzburg ministerial family. The Falkenbergers and the Ravensburger ruled the Main Valley north of Würzburg from both castles and held a powerful position in the Würzburg Monastery .

After Bodo von Ravensburg and Heinrich von Falkenberg murdered the Würzburg bishop Konrad von Querfurt on December 3, 1202 , both castles were razed and the lords of the castle and their helpers were taken over by Pope Innocent III. put under the curse . Despite the later dissolution of the ban, the castles were not rebuilt.

description

The elongated castle complex, of which only a few remains of the wall testify, had a keep with a diameter of seven meters. A larger section of the wall, which could have belonged to an outer wall or a bailey , can be found on the ascent from the left side of the Main. Remains of a semicircular neck moat and other moats are also preserved. There is a small chapel on the edge of the castle grounds, which are surrounded by one of the largest black pine stands in southern Germany .
