Erlach Castle

The moated castle Erlach is a medieval moated castle in the center of Erlach , today part of Ochsenfurt in Lower Franconia .

history

The castle was built in the 12th century by the Lords of Erlach. It was first mentioned in 1151. In the 14th century, a new building was built in place of the original complex. At the time of the German Peasants' War , the castle was destroyed in 1525 and only rebuilt after 1545. In the course of its history, it came into the possession of various Lower Franconian rulers, just like the population of the associated place. The Lords of Seinsheim ruled for about 200 years , then the Counts of Schwarzenberg for about 150 years . The property was finally sold to the Catholic Church for the symbolic price of one thaler . At the beginning of the 19th century, the castle was expanded and the school and teacher's apartment were housed there.

Building description

The listed castle has an octagonal floor plan. Two-storey buildings surround a courtyard with the rectangular, in hump cuboid work erected keep , which projects beyond the 32 meters the overall system. Today the moat that once protected the castle has been drained.
