Burkhart Engelberg
Burkhart Engelberg , also Burkhard Engelberger (* around 1447 perhaps in Hornberg ; † February 12, 1512 in Augsburg ), was a stonemason, architect and city builder of Augsburg. Between around 1490 and 1512 he ran the largest private stonemasonry workshop with a supraregional effect in the imperial city of Augsburg.
Life
Engelberg was perhaps born in Hornberg around 1447 and was probably educated in the Upper Rhine and Swabia.
After moving to Augsburg shortly before 1477, he was able to build up a large construction company with various parliaments and masters for special tasks, which also carried out very different work across the region.
After the basilica of St. Ulrich and Afra collapsed in a storm in 1474, he took over the role of parliaments in 1477 and then the design, construction management and execution of the new building, which lasted until 1512.
From 1483 he was involved in the redesign of the cathedral and in 1493 in the rescue of the lowered tower of the Ulm Minster . Engelberg was also involved in the construction of the Bolzano parish church and designed the tower of the church in Schwaz . In Augsburg he designed numerous town houses, including the double property of the brothers Ulrich, Georg and Jakob Fugger.
Numerous decorative architectures (micro-architecture) emerged from his workshop: together with Gregor Erhart and A. Daucher, he created the sacraments of St. Moritz in Augsburg around 1502 . In 1503 the sacrament house in the Donauwörther parish church was built . Between around 1490 and 1501 the barrier system, richly ornamented with dazzling work, was built in Augsburg Cathedral .
Perhaps he was also responsible for the architectural work of the Fugger Chapel near St. Anna in Augsburg.
Engelberg lived in Augsburger Armenhausgasse 1, on which a plaque commemorates him today. He was the leading master builder of his time and due to his high tax revenue is counted among the wealthiest artists of his era. His tombstone is at the St. Ulrich and Afra basilica.
