Burkhard Schwenker (born April 20, 1958 in Minden ) is a German management consultant . From August 2003 to July 2010 he was managing director of the management consultancy Roland Berger , then chairman of the supervisory board until May 2013 and then managing director of the company again. From July 2014 to July 2015, Schwenker headed the Supervisory Board again. In July 2015 he was appointed Chairman of the Advisory Council of Roland Berger.

Schwenker is the deputy chairman of the Atlantik-Brücke and a member of the board of trustees of the Zeit Foundation .

Life

Schwenker studied mathematics and business administration at Bielefeld University . He started his career as an executive assistant at PWA Papierwerke Waldhof-Aschaffenburg AG. From 1986 to 1989 he was a research assistant with Rolf Wolff at the Nordic University in Flensburg . Here he also completed his business management doctorate on the subject of service companies in competition in 1989 and remained its only doctoral candidate due to the closure of the Nordic University . In the same year he joined Roland Berger Strategy Consultants.

In 1992, Schwenker was elected partner of the company and in 1994 took over management of the Corporate Development Competence Center. He led the negotiations between the company's partners and Deutsche Bank on the management buyout of Roland Berger Strategy Consultants in 2000. In 2003, Schwenker was elected Chairman of the Executive Committee of Roland Berger Strategy Consultants and, at the end of 2006, was elected by the partners for a further term approved. From July 2010 onwards, Schwenker was Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Roland Berger Strategy Consultants before he was re-elected Chairman of the Executive Committee on May 4, 2013.

In 2008 he was appointed honorary professor by the Leipzig Graduate School of Management. At HHL, Schwenker teaches strategic management with a focus on organization, strategy and corporate transformation. Since 2009, Schwenker has been Academic Director of the HHL Center for Scenario Planning together with Torsten Wulf .

In addition, until 2014 he was a member of the board of the Association of German University Professors for Business Administration (VHB) and is currently Deputy Chairman of the VHB Board of Friends. He is a member of the University Council of the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg as well as the boards of trustees of the Dresden International University (DIU) and the EBS University of Economics and Law . Burkhard Schwenker is also a Visiting Fellow at the Saïd Business School at Oxford University.

In June 2017, Schwenker became chairman of the newly established board of trustees of Kühne Logistics University .

Burkhard Schwenker is married, has three children and lives in Hamburg .

Mandates

Swivel is a member of the supervisory boards of Hamburger Sparkasse , the Hamburg airport and a member of the shareholders' committee of the private bank MM Warburg & CO . In May 2017 he was appointed to the Supervisory Board of the Hensoldt Group by the Federal Ministry of Economics .

Schwenker is on the advisory boards of various start-up companies , including FreightHub, a fully digital freight forwarding company from Berlin.

Sociopolitical engagement

On September 1, 2010, Burkhard Schwenker became chairman of the Roland Berger Foundation. The foundation awards grants to socially disadvantaged children and young people and awards the Roland Berger Prize for Human Dignity. Schwenker also supports the Association of German Women Entrepreneurs (VdU) with its project “Greater presence of women in supervisory bodies”. At enable2start , an award from Financial Times Deutschland for innovative company founders, Schwenker was one of the jury members. In addition, Burkhard Schwenker was a member of the board of trustees of berufundfamile gGmbh , an initiative of the non-profit Hertie Foundation , and of the Values ​​Commission eV Burkhard Schwenker is committed to the WWF in the field of the environment . Schwenker has been a member of the Zeit-Stiftung's board of trustees since 2015.

As deputy chairman of the Atlantik-Brücke , he is committed to good German-American relations. Within the Atlantik-Brücke he also heads the working group for foreign and security policy.

On September 26, 2011 Burkhard Schwenker was elected to the board of the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra . The symphony orchestra is a registered association and is directed by director Daniel Kühnel . Schwenker is chairman of the supervisory board of the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra.

In November 2011, Burkhard Schwenker was also a member of a 21-person jury that, in collaboration with Wirtschaftswoche, selected the 60 most important makers of the energy transition.

Burkhard Schwenker is the patron of the book project “ Jewish Soldiers - Jewish Resistance ”. In his opinion, the book offers historical experiences that could form the basis for the formation of a European community of values.

Schwenker is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Lebendige Stadt Foundation and the Senate of the German Academy of Science and Engineering . He is a member of the steering committee of the Wissensfabrik - Companies for Germany association and chairman of the jury for the Weconomy founder award of the Wissensfabrik.

Schwenker is involved in refugee aid and, as board member of the Roland Berger Foundation, played a key role in the study "The refugee crisis as an opportunity". He has also sponsored an Afghan refugee.

European commitment

Schwenker is a proponent of a "European" value-oriented and sustainable management approach. He is the initiator and jury member of " Best of European Business ". The BEB Award honors European companies that have achieved outstanding economic results. Schwenker is a guest author in various business magazines on European topics.
