Burkhard von Oltigen

Burkhard von Oltigen († December 24, 1089 in Gleichen ) was Bishop of Lausanne from 1056 to 1089 .

Life

Burkhard was the son of Count Bucco von Oltingen . He was married, which was against the rules of Gregorian reform . In the investiture dispute he supported Henry IV. And was one of the bishops who in 1076 at the Synod of Worms declared the deposition of Pope Gregory VII . He was then excommunicated and accompanied Henry IV on his bus trip to Canossa . He fought the rival king Rudolf von Rheinfelden . To protect against his raids, he built a wall around Avenches. For his services Henry IV awarded him the title of Chancellor of Italy in 1079. He expelled Ulrich von Zell , the Prior von Payerne , who criticized his way of life , and forced his recall to Cluny . Burkhard was killed by soldiers of Margrave Ekbert II during the siege of Gleichen Castle on Christmas Day 1089 .
