Bury is a town in the metropolitan county of Greater Manchester about eight miles north of central Manchester in England . It has around 61,000 inhabitants (2001) and is the administrative seat of the Metropolitan Borough of Bury of the same name with around 182,000 inhabitants. In the north of the city lies a moor landscape and in the south the city borders on the River Irwell .
The city's most famous son is Robert Peel . The English police officers are named after him as Bobbies or Peelers .
