C. Lowell Harriss

Clement Lowell Harriss (born August 2, 1912 in Fairbury , Nebraska , † December 14, 2009 in Bronxville , New York ) was an American economist and long-time university professor who dealt in particular with the financial and tax law of the United States.

biography

After attending school, he studied at Harvard University and graduated in 1934 with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.). In 1938 he was appointed professor of economics at Columbia University in New York City and held this professorship until his retirement in 1981. In 1940 he earned a Philosophiae Doctor (Ph.D.) from Columbia University .

After doing his military service in the US Army Air Corps between 1943 and 1946 during the Second World War , he resumed his work as a university professor. During his decades of teaching, he dealt in particular with the financial and tax law of the USA.

Between 1961 and 1979, he was a business advisor to the Tax Foundation , a think tank that collected data and researched tax policies of the US and state governments . In 1979 he was briefly a member of the board of directors of the Institute for Research on the Economics of Taxation .

After his retirement, from 1981 to 1987 he was Executive Director of the Academy for Political Science, a non-profit organization for the non-partisan, objective analysis of political, social and economic matters. He also served intermittently on the boards of the American Institute for Economic Research, the John C. Lincoln Institute for Real Estate Policy, a think tank on the use, taxation, and regulation of real estate, and President of the National Tax Association .

Last time was Harris, who is also a member of the Republican Party was 1989-1996 president of the Robert Schalkenbach - Foundation . In addition, he was temporarily involved in the American Economic Association , the International Fiscal Association , the Mont Pelerin Society , the Royal Economic Society and numerous organizations and institutions.

In 1979 he was awarded the Mark Van Doren Prize, which has been given to outstanding university teachers by students at Columbia University since 1962.

In his honor, the "C. Lowell Harriss" professorship was established at the Faculty of Economics, International and Political Affairs at Columbia University, whose current chair is Richard Clarida .
