Attack on the Tai An Kou in November 2010

On November 20, 2010, the Tai An Kou was attacked by Somali pirates in the Arabian Sea off the coast of Oman . The crew was able to hide in a shelter and make an emergency call.

Technical data and equipment

The drive of the ships carried diesel electric by two of Siemens -electric each with 5,000  kW power driven Siemens Schottel azimuth thruster . The cruising speed of the ships is around 14  knots . The ships are equipped with two bow thrusters , each with an output of 800 kW. You have a system for dynamic positioning (DP-2).

The electricity for the drive motors is done by three generators of nine cylinder - diesel engines of the manufacturer Wärtsilä : be driven with a total of 10,125 kW (type 9R32). The power requirement of the on-board network and any necessary power supply for the transported goods is ensured by three diesel generators with 3,900 kW output and one diesel generator with 900 kW output.

The deck is 125 × 36 m. By retrofitting the floats at the stern of the ships, the usable area of the deck has been reduced. The length of the deck from the foredeck to the floats is 114 m, the space between the two floats is 22 m. The deck can be loaded with 18 t / m². When submerged, the deck is a maximum of nine meters deep.

The deck superstructures are located in the bow area of the ships on the 30 m high foredeck. Behind the deck extensions, cranes are installed on both sides , each of which can lift 15 t.

In addition to the ship's crew, twelve additional people can be accommodated on board .

The hull of the ships is reinforced with ice ( ice class B).
