On March 13, Schleswig-Holstein ordered a state-wide school closure from March 16. Emergency care was subsequently set up for children whose parents work in systemically important professions.

After the Schleswig-Holstein islands had been closed to tourism on March 15, a nationwide tourism ban was imposed on March 19, which was initially limited to April 19. After second home owners were asked to leave in some districts, the Ministry of the Interior made it clear on March 23 that they were allowed to stay, but that new arrivals were only allowed for professional or other compelling reasons. This was subsequently checked by the police and regulatory authorities; People without a primary residence in Schleswig-Holstein were asked to leave the state.

In view of reports that Hamburg citizens were not allowed to go home on the Schleswig-Holstein state border in Glückstadt at Easter , the deputy editor-in-chief of the Hamburger Abendblatt , Berndt Röttger, criticized the behavior of the state government as sharply in his leading article on April 14th " Small states " and " separatism " that "tear apart" the neighboring countries.

The University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein is planning a biobank for blood samples from people with COVID-19. Long-term observation of patients with recovered COVID-19 disease for at least ten years is intended to help identify, identify and treat possible late effects of the infection at an early stage.

On April 22, 2020, the state government decided to make mask compulsory from April 29. For Lars Harms , chairman of the SSW parliamentary group , this was “an uncoordinated snap shot”.

In May, the virus was detected in 109 employees of a slaughterhouse company in Bad Bramstedt in the Segeberg district , who are housed in the Liliencron barracks in Kellinghusen . The virus was also detected in 151 employees at a meat factory in Coesfeld in North Rhine-Westphalia. In these places, the upper limit of 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants set in an agreement between the federal and state governments was exceeded within seven days , after which strict restrictions are to be reintroduced. As a result, COVID-19 tests were initiated in all slaughterhouses in both federal states.
