The COVID-19 pandemic occurs in Rhineland-Palatinate since 2020 as part of the global COVID-19 pandemic and in particular the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany on. February 2020

On February 26, 2020, the Bundeswehr in Rhineland-Palatinate confirmed the infection of a ready-to-fly soldier at Cologne / Bonn Airport , who had previously been in contact with the sick couple from Heinsberg at a carnival party in Gangelt ; he was treated at the Bundeswehr Central Hospital in Koblenz . On February 27, 2020, an infected patient was reported in the West Palatinate Clinic in Kaiserslautern who had previously been in Iran.

March 2020

On March 5, 2020, the ready-to-fly soldier at Cologne / Bonn Airport, who tested positive on February 26, was released from the hospital. He was the first confirmed convalescent in Germany whose chain of infection could not be traced back to China. On March 9, 2020, a student from WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management in Vallendar tested positive for the virus. On March 12, 2020, the city of Trier announced that a resident of the city had been infected with the corona virus. According to the health department, the person concerned is fine. On March 17, 2020, two people in the Birkenfeld district were tested for COVID-19 for the first time and confirmed in a laboratory. Both had stayed in Tyrol.

April 2020

As of April 19, more than 100 deaths were recorded in Rhineland-Palatinate. At the end of April this rose to 166. The number of infected people rose to a total of 6,029 by April 30, but the number of newly infected people between April 20 and 30 was consistently less than 100 new cases per day. In the first half of the month, that number had been more than 200 new cases on some days.

May 2020

Since the beginning of May, the average number of new infections per day has been less than 40 cases. According to the state government on May 5, 2020, the current death rate was 186 and 5,190 of the 6,175 sick people had recovered from Covid-19.

In the third week of May, the incidence in all rural districts was less than 267 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Activity during the last week was less than 10 cases per 100,000 population over seven days.

June 2020

In June the number of newly infected people continued to decrease. There were no more than 30 new cases on any day of the month. After the headquarters of Tönnies Holding in Rheda-Wiedenbrück, North Rhine-Westphalia , had developed into a center of the pandemic in Germany, tests were also carried out in meat operations in Rhineland-Palatinate. These were largely negative.

In total, only five deaths related to COVID-19 were known in June 2020.

July 2020

At the beginning of July, the number of new weekly infections increased again slightly.

August 2020

In August, the number of new infections every day increased significantly. On August 19, it exceeded 100 cases for the first time since mid-April 2020. In contrast, the number of deaths remained low.

Educational area

On March 13th, Rhineland-Palatinate ordered a state-wide school closure from March 16th. Emergency care was subsequently set up for children whose parents work in systemically important professions.

With the start of school after the summer vacation, the schools in Rhineland-Palatinate resumed regular operation on August 17, 2020 without any distance requirement. In the event of an increase in the number of infections, restricted regular operations with distance requirements and further hygiene measures as well as temporary school closings can be ordered as measures. These measures can be taken for individual classes or schools, for a region or nationwide. In the event of closure, distance learning is taught, which schools and teachers must prepare for.

From March 18, 2020, amusement, sports and leisure facilities as well as non-systemically relevant retail in Rhineland-Palatinate were to be kept closed. If the retail trade could be opened further, queues had to be avoided by means of access controls. On March 20, the Prime Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate Malu Dreyer announced in a televised address that all cafes, ice cream parlors and restaurants in Rhineland-Palatinate would be closed from midnight on March 21. A walk in the fresh air is allowed, but no more than five people are allowed to stand together. Furthermore, the treatment places for corona patients with severe courses are to be increased. Fever ambulances have been set up throughout the state and are being expanded so that tests can be carried out quickly. In addition, the shuttle traffic from the French border area was regulated. The Rhineland-Palatinate area was only allowed to be entered by travelers from risk areas for trips to the place of employment and back. On March 22nd, the state government implemented the ban on contact.

There was no formal tightening of the restrictions on Easter 2020. Instead, Prime Minister Malu Dreyer appealed urgently to the citizens of Rhineland-Palatinate: "Do not travel, do not go on longer trips, do not meet additional people".

The first easing of restrictions took place on April 20. Zoos and parks were allowed to reopen. On May 6, Prime Minister Dreyer announced further easing. Since May 13th, catering establishments have been allowed to reopen under certain conditions. However, you are obliged to record the contact details of the guests in order to be able to trace possible chains of infection. Further easing took effect on June 10th. Since then, a maximum of ten people from different households have again been allowed to meet in public spaces. In addition, larger events were allowed, the number of participants was limited to a maximum of 75 people for indoor events (150 people from June 24th) and for outdoor events to 250 people.

Establishment of specialized clinics

In order to concentrate the efforts in Rhineland-Palatinate, five corona focus clinics have been set up. These are located in Kaiserslautern ( West Palatinate Clinic ), Koblenz ( Community Clinic Middle Rhine ), Mainz ( University Clinic ), Ludwigshafen ( Municipal Clinic ) and Trier ( Clinic Mother House of the Borromean Women ).

Mask requirement

On April 22nd, 2020, Prime Minister Malu Dreyer announced at a press conference in Mainz that from April 27th, a mask is required in local public transport and when shopping in shops.
