Caine is a radio play series by Günter Merlau, published by Lausch - Fantastic Radio Play from 2006 to 2009, based on a series of novels published by Basilisk Verlag.

content

The series tells the story of the assassin Steven Caine, who on the day of his execution is kidnapped by an alien people, the Kyan Kor, in order to stand by them in the fight against their archenemy, the Aganoy. In order to make themselves subservient to the headstrong professional murderer, the Kyan Kor Caine cast a spell with the help of an artifact, the penumbra amulet. From then on, the protagonist has to share his body with the spirit of the powerful and bloodthirsty Kyan-Kor warrior, Kartaan, who repeatedly takes control of Caine's consciousness. The protagonist gets caught between the front lines of a battle for supremacy on earth, in which the Kyan Kor, the Aganoy and a human secret society, the secret brotherhood around Collin Drake, are at war.

scope

The radio play series comprises ten episodes. The last radio play episode entitled "Caine_10: Apocalypso" was released in November 2009. Each episode has an average length of 60 minutes. The book series is being continued by Basilisk Verlag with volume 11 “The Legend of the Dark Prophet” and is directly linked to the events of the previous episodes.

Literary template and radio play adaptation

The radio play series is based on the booklet novels "Caine, The Dark Prophet" from Basilisk Verlag. The novels are written by a team of authors based on expositions by Patrick J. Grieser and consist of 10 episodes. The radio play adaptation comes from Günter Merlau. Since the 4th episode (darkness) Merlau has been writing the game books together with Gerry Streberg. The radio play series is a rather free adaptation of the literary model. In addition to some omissions, the radio plays also contain independent storylines that do not come from the model and mainly deal with the background stories of the characters. These supplemented plot elements, as well as the extensive inner monologues of the protagonist and first-person narrator Steven Caine, which are specific to the radio play , serve to characterize the characters, which thereby acquire a psychological depth that the characters in the booklet novels lack.

The achronological narrative structure with a large number of flashbacks and the parallel storylines that show the course of the conflict on the different fronts from the perspective of the different characters are characteristic of the radio play. Stylistically, the coarse pun, the extensive depictions of violence and the bizarre characters bring the series close to the films of Quentin Tarantino .

occupation

The protagonist , Steven Caine, is voiced by Torsten Michaelis , the German dubbing voice of Wesley Snipes or Sean Bean . Michaelis has received several awards for his role. Claudia Urbschat-Mingues (German dubbing voice of Angelina Jolie ) as agent Linda Watkins, Klaus Sonnenschein (dubbing voice of Morgan Freeman and Sean Connery, among others ) as alien leader Torrkan and Karl Schulz as grumpy police officer Sean Kilkenny can be heard in other roles . Lutz Riedel (dubbing voice of, among others, Samuel L. Jackson ) embodies the role of the sadistic Kyan Kor warrior Kartaan.

In addition to prominent voices from the dubbing sector, there are also well-known radio play speakers on the cast list for the series. Among them are Reinhilt Schneider as the alien warrior Dhalarin, Kaspar Eichel as the Mafia boss Moretti and Peter Groeger as the wise alien shaman Setho.

Music

The music used underlines the action-packed staging of the radio plays and, with a few exceptions, comes from the field of hard rock and metal. While the Danish nu-metal band Mnemic ( Nuclear Blast ) provided the soundtrack in episodes 3 (Collin Drake and the brotherhood) and 4 (darkness) , the music since part 5 has been from the Hamburg metal label Tiefdruck Musik . In episode 5 (Rebellion) and 6 (Mordendyk) this is the German industrial metal band Limbogott, in episode 7 (Dunkler Prophet) Mongofifth and in Caine 8 (Torrkan) the US band Devil's Gift around front woman Lennon Murphy. In episode 9 (Kartaan) the band Die So Fluid from England.

Figure representation and genre classification

In terms of content, (dark) fantasy and science fiction elements are mainly interwoven with a figure representation in the style of film noir (or neo-noir) in the Caine radio play series . The city's (anti) heroes, shaped by crime, corruption and violence, face the invasion from space and the struggle of two fantastic races for supremacy on earth. This bloody, corrupt and lawless environment forms the fictional cosmos of the Caine series. In this environment, which no longer knows any limits (neither the limits of morality and order, nor those of the expected power structures or natural laws), the characters have to find their way around and develop their own guidelines. Since their individual values often cannot be reconciled with the acute requirements of the situation, conflicts and doubts arise time and again, some of which are deepened in flashbacks into the character's individual past.

Violence and radio play

Since the first episode, the series has repeatedly caused controversy and polarized the ranks of critics and radio play fans. The ratings from the professional audience range from "just plain brutal" and "tasteless" to "horror fantasy to your heart's content" (TV feature film). This broad spectrum of opinions on the radio plays is mainly due to the high level of brutality and attention to detail in the depiction of violence, as well as the fecal language that has become the characteristic style element of the series. What has long been the norm in film and television is new territory in the radio drama sector and makes Caine a real original and a pioneer in adult radio drama with the series' own border crossing. With the numerous quotes from well-known films and books, the work is clearly in the post-modern tradition of pop culture entertainment.
