Calin Rovinescu (born September 16, 1955 in Bucharest , Romania ) is a Canadian manager and chairman and CEO of Air Canada , Canada's largest airline. He has headed the company since April 1, 2009.

Life

Calin Rovinescu was born on September 16, 1955 in Bucharest , Romania , to Ionel and Adriana Rovinescu. At the age of six, Calin Rovinescu immigrated to Canada by ship with his parents and sister Olivia. His father was a urologist and surgeon , his mother a teacher with several master's degrees and knowledge of Chinese culture. The Romanian Jewish family wanted to flee from anti-Semitism and oppression.

education

In 1980, Rovinescu graduated from Ottawa University with a Bachelor of Laws . In 1978 he graduated from Montreal University with a Bachelor of Civil Law . In 1974 he received the Quebec College Diploma from McGill University . In 2014, Rovinescu received honorary doctorates from the University of Ottawa and the University of Montreal. On November 9, 2015, he became a Chancellor at the University of Ottawa.

In November 2016, Rovinescu was awarded honorary doctorates from the Polytechnic University of Bucharest and Concordia University in Montreal. In May 2017, Rovinescu was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Windsor .

work life

Rovinescu first joined Air Canada in 2000 as Executive Vice President Corporate Development & Strategy and served as Chief Restructuring Officer from 2003 to 2004. Between 2004 and his return to Air Canada in 2009, Rovinescu co-founded an investment bank .

In addition, Rovinescu since November 2012 Chairman of the Star Alliance - Board of Directors , the controlling body of the Star Alliance, the world's largest airline alliance, headquartered in Frankfurt am Main.

He is also a member of the IATA Board of Governors , a trade association that represents around 240 airlines. From June 2014 to June 2015 he held the role of chairman .

He also serves on the board of directors of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives , an organization made up of the CEOs of the largest Canadian companies and representing all sectors of the Canadian economy .

The Globe and Mail 's Report on Business magazine named Rovinescu as Canada's best CEO of 2013 . In 2014, Financial Post named Rovinescu as CEO of the Year .

Prior to joining Air Canada, Rovinescu was a Managing Partner at the Montreal law firm Stikeman Elliott .

In 2016, Rovinescu was named Canada's Outstanding CEO of the Year .
