Call of Duty: World at War is a first-person shooter developed by Treyarch and released by Activision on November 13, 2008 . The game represents the fifth part of the Call of Duty series and was released for Windows , Mac OS X , Xbox 360 , PlayStation 3 , PlayStation 2 , Nintendo DS and Wii .

action

In a total of 15 single player missions you switch between the Pacific region and the European theater of war.

  • Pacific:

As the American marine infantryman Private Miller, you are freed from a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp on Makin by your comrades , fight your way across the island with them and finally escape with speedboats. Then they go ashore during a large-scale amphibious landing operation at White Beach on Peleliu , capture the island's airport and defend it against a Japanese counterattack. Then you cleared several trench systems, bunkers, mortar and artillery positions on the island, before being a crew member of a PBY Catalina flying boat in the South China Sea, sinking Japanese cargo ships and defending a US fleet against patrol boats and kamikaze pilots . Finally you fight at Wana Ridge on Okinawa and conquer the Shuri fortress .

  • Europe:

As a Soviet soldier Petrenko you fight first as a sniper in Stalingrad , where you get the main order to kill the German general Heinrich Amsel. Then you take part as an infantryman in the battle of the Seelow Heights and later control a T-34 tank there. Finally, as an infantryman, you penetrate Berlin again , fight your way through the streets, houses and subway shafts before you storm the Reichstag building and hoist the Soviet flag on the roof.

Co-op mode

Co-op is a novelty in the Call of Duty game world. In this mode you can play the campaign with up to three other players on the LAN or over the Internet. In this co-op mode "Death Cards" (found in the single player game) can be used.

Zombie mode

In the original version of the game, another mission awaits the player after the campaign has ended once. In this one plays in a partially destroyed house, in which one has to fight against so-called "Nazi zombies". The mission cannot be completed successfully because the number of rounds is infinite. The zombies come running towards the house from the outside, tear off the six boards from each window and climb inside. For killing the zombies or rebuilding the board barriers, the player receives points that he can invest in weapons or access to new parts of the building. The level of difficulty increases with the level, because the zombies are getting stronger and faster. In the co-op mode of the English version, this mission can also be played with four players. Patches 1.1–1.7 of the uncensored version make it possible to play three more zombie levels.

Custom Maps

For the PC version of World at War, users can create their own mods with the official Radiant program.

marketing

On September 9th, 2008 Activision announced a beta version of the game for the Xbox 360 game console from Microsoft , which should appear as a multiplayer version. A beta version of the multiplayer part for Microsoft Windows was also released on September 28, 2008 .

Participation in the respective advance versions required registration on the game's website. With the start of the retail version of the game, the beta phase ended on November 10, 2008 in the USA, November 11, 2008 in Australia and November 13, 2008 in Europe. A participation of German players was excluded for legal reasons. By November 2013, the game was sold around 15.7 million times worldwide.

The European version was indexed on List B due to the glorification of violence and unconstitutional symbolism .
