Calum French (* 25. August 1995 in Gateshead ) is a British boxer in the lightweight .

Career

Calum French is 1.68 m tall and trains at the Birtley amateur boxing club in the Borough of Gateshead . He is multiple English and British junior and youth champion in his age and weight class, he was also a participant in the Junior European Championships 2011 in Hungary and the Junior World Championships 2011 in Kazakhstan .

In 2015 he became the English bantamweight champion and 2016 English lightweight champion. He also won the Tammer tournament in Finland and the chemistry cup in Germany in 2016 . He also defeated the Asian champions Dordschnjambuugiin Otgondalai .

In 2017 he won the Strandja tournament in Bulgaria , beating Shiva Thapa , Otar Eranosyan , Jurij Schestak and Gabil Mamedow , among others . He was then called up at the 2017 European Championships in Ukraine , where he won a bronze medal in the lightweight after a narrow semi-final defeat with 2: 3 against Jurij Schestak. He was then qualified for the 2017 World Championships in Hamburg , where he was eliminated again in the round of 16 against Jurij Schestak. French has also been boxing for the British Lionhearts in the World Series of Boxing (WSB) since 2017 .

At the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia he lost to Manish Kaushik in the quarterfinals, but won the silver medal at the 2018 EU Championships in Spain after losing to Sofiane Oumiha in the final . In the semi-finals he had defeated Francesco Maietta .
