Life

Origin and early years

He came from a noble family holding the title of marchese and was the younger of two brothers. Camillo de Simone was the nephew of Cardinal Gennaro Antonio De Simone and an uncle of Cardinal Domenico De Simone .

Church career

Camillo de Simone began his training at the seminary in Benevento, then he studied in Rome at the University of La Sapienza, where he obtained the degree of Doctor iuris utriusque on February 16, 1771 . He was accepted into the clergy on December 21, 1756. He was consultor of the Index Congregation and served the later Cardinal Paolo Francesco Antamori .

Pope Pius VI appointed Camillo de Simone on December 16, 1782 Bishop of Sutri and Nepi . Since he had not received any ordinations before, he probably received the minor ordinations , the subdeacons -, deacons - and priestly ordination in quick succession before his consecration as bishop. On March 9, 1783, Cardinal Paolo Francesco Antamori, Bishop of Orvieto , gave him episcopal ordination in the Roman church of Santa Maria in Vallicella ; Co- consecrators were Giuseppe Maria Contesini , papal almsman , and Archbishop Francesco Guidi di Bagno-Talenti , canon of the Vatican Basilica . On June 17, 1784, Camillo de Simone was appointed papal assistant to the throne .

He was an opponent of Napoleonic rule and refused the French occupiers the oath of allegiance. For this reason he was arrested on May 21, 1810 and held for four years in Belley, later Nice. In the spring of 1814 he returned to his diocese .

Last years and death

In the consistory of March 8, 1816 , Pope Pius VII elevated him to cardinal in pectore , this was published in the consistory of July 22, 1816. Camillo de Simone received the cardinal's hat on July 25 of the same year, and on September 23, 1816, San Giovanni a Porta Latina was given to him as the titular church .

Camillo de Simone died on January 2, 1818 after a stroke. He was buried in the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta in Sutri.
