Canticum novum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

canticum novum is a mixed chamber choir in Münster in North Rhine-Westphalia with around 30 singers, which was founded by Michael Schmutte in 2000 and has been under his direction ever since.

repertoire

The musical performances include the great works of sacred choral music from the Renaissance to the present. Besides well-known works such as the Christmas Oratorio , the St. John Passion and the St. Matthew Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach , the Messiah and Judas Maccabaeus by Handel , the Vespers of Claudio Monteverdi and Brahms - Requiem , the choir also brought rare-heard works such as Thomas Tallis ' 40-part motet Spem in alium and György Ligetis Lux aeterna for the performance. Cooperations took place with the Westphalian Wilhelms University as part of the Cluster of Excellence “Religion and Politics”.

Canticum novum designed the German premiere of the Magnificat by Urmas Sisask , as well as the world premieres of the Three Choirs dedicated to the choir by Joachim Lepping and the Oratorio of Creation “With All Eyes” by Jutta Bitsch (* 1969).

Choirmaster

Michael Schmutte, b. 1960 in Damme, studied church music in Graz , Bremen and Vienna (A diploma). This was followed by additional training as a qualified music therapist at the University of Münster, as well as choral conducting studies with Erwin Ortner , Eric Ericson , Frieder Bernius and Johannes Prinz, among others . The time with Nikolaus Harnoncourt in Vienna was formative. Schmutte also applies the performance practice of early music learned here in the corresponding works with the canticum novum . In 2008 Schmutte was appointed to the Artistic Advisory Board of the Association of German Concert Choirs (VDKC).
