Frieder Bernius (2014)

Frieder Bernius (* 1947 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein ) is a German choir and orchestra conductor .

Live and act

Frieder Bernius was born in 1947 in the Ludwigshafen district of Oppau, the second of four children to a Protestant parish family. He took piano and violin lessons at an early age, sang in the choir of the local parish and in the Evangelical Youth Choir of the Palatinate, and took organ lessons with KMD Karl Kohlmeyer. After graduating from the old-language Karl-Friedrich-Gymnasium in Mannheim, he studied music and musicology at the Stuttgart University of Music and at the University of Tübingen . He attended master classes with u. a. Witold Rowicki , Sergiu Celibidache , Edward Downes and Otmar Suitner .

During his studies he laid the foundation for his freelance work by founding the Stuttgart Chamber Choir at the age of 20. After his focus in the first ten years was mainly on the interpretation of a cappella music, he soon expanded his repertoire to all other genres and styles. Since 1977 Frieder Bernius has also worked with leading orchestras. He also did guest productions with the radio choirs of SDR, NDR, WDR and RIAS Berlin. From the mid-1980s he increasingly turned to historical performance practice .

In 1987, Frieder Bernius initiated the International Festival of Early Music (today: Festival Stuttgart Barock ). In 1991 he also founded the Stuttgart Baroque Orchestra , which specializes in the 18th century and is made up of leading musicians from historical performance practice. The same year also saw the founding of the Stuttgart Classic Philharmonic , which represents the orchestral counterpart to the Stuttgart Chamber Choir for performances of choral symphonic works in large cast.

In 1998 Frieder Bernius received an honorary professorship at the Mannheim University of Music . He regularly gives oratorio courses for singers at the Leopold Mozart Center in Augsburg and the Musikhochschule Würzburg . From 2000 he was the artistic director of ChorWerkRuhr , which he co-founded, and until 2003 belonged to the Ruhr Festival and the Ruhrtriennale . In 2006, Frieder Bernius founded the Hofkapelle Stuttgart, an ensemble dedicated to the repertoire of the early 19th century on historical instruments.

Three years later, Frieder Bernius was elected President of the Johann Nepomuk David Society. He is the chairman and artistic director of the Musik Podiums Stuttgart , a free cultural institution that coordinates and bundles the activities of the conductor and the ensembles Kammerchor Stuttgart , Barockorchester Stuttgart, Hofkapelle Stuttgart and Classic Philharmonie Stuttgart . This also includes the organization of the Stuttgart Barock Festival and the Open Air Schloss Solitude, which has been taking place since 2003 .

Revivals and premieres

Frieder Bernius is characterized by curiosity about unknown scores. Since 1992 he has staged re-performances of 18th century operas. He had works by Johann Adolph Hasse , Jean-Philippe Rameau , Ignaz Holzbauer , Christian Cannabich , Niccolò Jommelli , Johann Gottlieb Naumann , Johann Wenzel Kalliwoda , Justin Heinrich Knecht and Johann Rudolf Zumsteeg printed again from the autographs .
