Chorwerk Ruhr ( spelling CHORWERK RUHR ) is a vocal ensemble in Germany. His repertoire ranges from occidental unison and polyphony to large oratorical works. The choir conductor Florian Helgath has been the artistic director of ChorWerk Ruhr since 2011. He sees a focus of his work in shedding light on contemporary choral music in relation to traditional forms of music and thus making it appear new for the listener against the background of music history.

ChorWerk Ruhr is a project of Kultur Ruhr GmbH, funded by the Ministry for Family, Children, Youth, Culture and Sport of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia .

ChorWerk Ruhr was founded in August 1999 by Kultur Ruhr GmbH in association with the Ruhr Area Municipal Association, the City of Essen and the State Ministry for Labor, Social Affairs, Urban Development, Culture and Sport with the aim of building up a choir ensemble of the highest possible vocal quality thus to make a contribution to the artistic profile of the Ruhr region.

Co-founder and first artistic director was Frieder Bernius , who directed ChorWerk Ruhr until 2003. From 2008 to 2011 the ensemble was supervised by Rupert Huber . Florian Helgath has been Artistic Director of ChorWerk Ruhr since 2011 .

Since February 2000 concerts have been taking place from the entire spectrum from old to new music. While ChorWerk Ruhr was able to establish itself as an ensemble for baroque music under Frieder Bernius, the focus has increasingly shifted to new music in recent years. The repertoire today includes compositions from Bach to Zender and from Monteverdi to Rihm. The choir has recorded a number of radio productions and CD releases.

Music theater productions have been created under the umbrella of the Ruhrtriennale since 2002. In the inaugural production of Willy Decker's directorship in 2009, the scenic and musical representation of ChorWerk Ruhr in Arnold Schönberg's Moses und Aron was celebrated as a sensation. In 2010 ChorWerk Ruhr took part in the opening premiere of the Ruhrtriennale, the world premiere of Samir Odeh-Tamimis Leila and Majnun. ChorWerk Ruhr was also represented annually in the directorship of Heiner Goebbels: 2012 with Prometheus by Carl Orff , 2013 with Das Mädchen mit den Schwefelhölzern by Helmut Lachenmann and 2014 with De Materie by Louis Andriessen .

In the case of the individual projects, a. the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen , the SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden and Freiburg or the Ensemble Modern . Bruno Weil , Hans Zender , Peter Neumann , Robin Gritton, Reinhard Goebel and Sylvain Cambreling were able to be won as conductors for these projects . ChorWerk Ruhr and the Ensemble Resonanz work together regularly .
