Cao Bằng is the capital of the province of the same name in the mountainous north of Vietnam .

The economic and administrative center of the region, located on a headland on the southwest bank of the Bang Giang River, was the most important French garrison town in Tongking (French name for the northernmost territories of Vietnam) at the time of French colonization . After the Vietnamese-Chinese war of 1979, the city sank temporarily into insignificance. Relations with the People's Republic of China have been revitalized since the 1990s, and the city's upswing is accelerating. Today Cao Bằng is home to around 46,300 residents. As in many cities in Northern Vietnam, large concrete buildings dominate the architectural zeitgeist. The hub of the city is the lively daily markets. The fresh produce from the traders is brought to Cao Bằng by means of fully loaded bamboo rafts.

Various ethnic minorities live in the city and its surroundings, especially the Red Dao , Tay and Nung . Their traditional lifestyle (costumes) has been preserved to this day.

Surroundings

After more than 30 years of exile, Ho Chi Minh set foot on Vietnamese soil again in 1941 in the border town of Pac Bo, not far from Cao Bng . There he lived temporarily in a cave (Coc-Bo cave) and organized the beginnings of his revolutionary movement from there . He installed cadre schools , translated the manifesto of the Communist Party of the USSR into the local language and instrumentalized the revolutionary newspaper, "Independent Vietnam" by Pac Bo for his ideas. Today, Pac Bo is often visited by tourists who walk in the footsteps of Ho Chi Minh.

tourism

Cao Bằng is a frequently chosen starting point for the scenic, imposing Bốn Giốc waterfalls , about 85 km to the northeast , which lie on Vietnamese and Chinese terrain.
