The Cap Sizun is an extremely pointed headland in Brittany . It lies at 48 ° 03 'north latitude and 04 ° 33' west longitude and protrudes from Douarnenez about 30 kilometers into the Atlantic Ocean . Here it separates the easternmost part of the Celtic Sea from the Iroise Sea in the north and the Biscay in the south . The Crozon Peninsula with the Rade de Brest is separated from Cap Sizun by the Bay of Douarnenez to the north , while the Bay of Audierne connects to the south .
The spectacular westernmost foothill of Cap Sizun is Pointe du Raz and although this headland does not mark the westernmost point of mainland France - this is the Pointe de Corsen north of Brest - the steep cliff of the Pointe du Raz is one of the most characteristic landmarks of the Breton coast . Just a few kilometers north and separated by the Baie des Trépassés , the Pointe du Van is its somewhat less rugged counterpart.
Cap Sizun offers a varied coastal landscape with miles of sandy beaches on the south coast - especially in the Bay of Audierne and steep, steep slopes on the north coast. There are a number of nature reserves and bird sanctuaries on the cape.
The Cap Sizun is the westernmost part of the historical Cornouaille landscape . Today it belongs to the Finistère department and is congruent with the canton of Pont-Croix . The larger towns of the cape include Pont-Croix , Audierne , Plouhinec , Confort-Meilars , Mahalon , Esquibien , Beuzec-Cap-Sizun , Goulien , Cléden-Cap-Sizun , Primelin , Plogoff and the Île de Sein .
