The Caprivi was a German steamship that was used as a seaside resort ship , especially on regular services between Stralsund and Hiddensee . It was the first passenger ship to regularly call at Hiddensee.

history

On behalf of Captain Gustav Bentzien from Ribnitz , the Caprivi was completed in 1890 at the Greifswald shipyard Julius Kessler. The planned use on the route between Ribnitz and Wustrow was just as unprofitable as on the connection between Stralsund and Devin opened by Bentzien . With a line from Stralsund to Wiek on Rügen , he finally made a new attempt. Ernst Luhde, the landlord from Hiddensee, induced him to visit the monastery regularly from the summer of 1892 . Passengers had at that time from the Bodden moored ships off and eingebootet be. The traffic to Hiddensee grew annually, with good utilization of the Caprivi . In 1905 the ship was rebuilt in Stettin and lengthened by four meters. The number of passengers increased by a third. The First World War significantly reduced island traffic. Bentzien tried to compensate for this by driving to the sea pilot station on the bow . In 1917 he sold his company to the Stralsund shipping company Carl Wothke.

The cooperative shipping company Vitte GmbH bought the Caprivi for 60,000 Reichsmarks on October 13, 1919 and put it into service on November 1, 1919 for day trips between Stralsund and Vitte and also for the transport of smaller quantities of freight. In 1920 repairs became necessary after the fire tube of the steam boiler had burned out in an accident on August 5th . The work on a Szczecin shipyard cost around 150,000 Reichsmarks due to inflation. In the 1920s, the Caprivi could no longer cope with the steadily increasing traffic. The number of passengers allowed was exceeded several times. After the Swanti was commissioned , the Caprivi was overhauled at the Stettiner Oderwerke in May 1925 . From August of the same year she drove on the new early connection from Stralsund to Vitte and Kloster, occasionally she also made special trips to the Sassnitz harbor. In the 1930s the condition of the ship deteriorated so much that the Caprivi was no longer approved in 1935 and was therefore retired. It was given away by the shipping company to the Hitler Youth , who expanded it into a HJ home with a berth in Vitte. In 1948 the Caprivi in Stralsund was scrapped.

technology

The Caprivi was measured at a length of 18 meters and 4 meters wide with 54 GRT . A compound steam engine with 60 hp brought the ship to 6.5 knots with one screw . In autumn 1905, the ship was lengthened to 22 meters at a Szczecin shipyard and received a new steam boiler. The number of passengers admitted to the transport increased from 120 to 162. The crew consisted of four men.
