The Swanti was a German passenger steamship that was mainly used in regular services between Stralsund and the island of Hiddensee .

history

The ship was commissioned in 1924 by the cooperative shipping company Hiddensee based in Vitte , because the previously used Caprivi was no longer able to cope with the increased demand for passenger transport to Hiddensee. In March 1925, ran Swanti on the Szczecin Oderwerke launched . It was put into service in May 1925 on the Stralsund – Hiddensee line. In addition to trips to Sassnitz and various other destination ports on Rügen , it was also used for special trips. During the Second World War , the Swanti stayed in the Hiddensee service to secure supplies for the islanders.

From August 1945 the ship was used by the Stralsund waterway authority as a buoy laying . In 1948 extensive repair work had to be carried out at a shipyard in Gager . At the end of May, the Swanti was handed over to the cooperative shipping company Hiddensee, which used it again on the previous route. Since the shipping company did not have a cargo ship, the Swanti had to transport more cargo on the afternoon tour. A general overhaul took place at the Volkswerft Stralsund in 1954.

With the dissolution of the company, the cooperative shipping company decided to sell the Swanti to the White Fleet in Stralsund on September 26, 1959 . This took over the ship on January 1st, 1960. In 1962 new steam boilers were installed in Magdeburg . In 1965 a renovation took place. The following year was Swanti in Stralsund launched . A planned conversion to a motor ship did not take place, instead the ship was demolished in 1968.

technology

The Swanti , measured at 87 GRT, was 26.1 meters long and 5.2 meters wide. A compound steam engine with 160 hp, which acted on one screw , brought the ship to 9.5 knots . Originally approved for 205 passengers, the permitted number of passengers after the renovation in 1965 was 195 passengers. The crew consisted of five men.
