Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker ( Japanese original title: 進 め! キ ノ ピ オ 隊長 , Susume! Kinopio-taichō , German about "Forward march! Troop leader Toad") is a puzzle game that the Japanese video game manufacturer Nintendo released in Europe on January 2, 2015 for the Wii U was released. On July 13, 2018 ports for the Nintendo 3DS and the Nintendo Switch appeared , which in addition to the old levels contain new levels thematically based on Super Mario Odyssey as well as a two-player mode in the Switch version.
Gameplay
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is based on the Captain Toad levels from Super Mario 3D World . In the game, the player controls Captain Toad , who has to find the right way to a treasure consisting of jewels and power stars in three-dimensional puzzle mazes and dodge enemies and their attacks. The protagonist cannot jump, however, he can only throw off opponents such as piranha plants with a pickaxe and has to overcome traps that are placed everywhere.
The game consists of game worlds such as haunted houses, hills and levels in space. There are also bosses like the giant bird Wingo and a dragon that lives in a volcano .
Amiibo
On January 14, 2015 it was announced that a Toad Amiibo would be released on March 20 of the same year . With it is possible to play a new mode in which you can find a pixel toad in different levels. This feature was made available as a software update on March 20th.

At the beginning of the game, Captain Toad and Toadette embark on an adventure, but Toadette is kidnapped by a giant magpie named Wingo. It is then up to Captain Toad to save her. After he has done that, the whole thing repeats itself, only this time Captain Toad is kidnapped and the player controls Toadette. Then a third episode begins, in which both lose each other and you take turns looking for each other. There are also bonus levels in the Wii U version in which you can play Captain Toad in modified Super Mario 3D World levels. These are only available if a Super Mario 3D World game is available. These bonus levels are not included in the Nintendo Switch port.
Development and publication
The game was announced on June 10, 2014 at Nintendo's E3 press conference.
In a Nintendo Direct on February 13, 2019, a free update, which enables a multiplayer mode, and the DLC Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker - special episode for the Nintendo Switch version of the game were announced. The update was released on the same day. On March 14, 2019, the DLC, which contains further challenges and new levels, was released along with a set containing the game and the DLC.

The game received a Metascore of 81% on Metacritic and an average rating of 81.03% on GameRankings .
