Carl August Friedrich Westenholz
Carl August Friedrich Westenholz , also Karl August Friedrich Westenholz , Carl Westenholtz , also Westenholtz (* baptized June 20, 1736 in Lauenburg / Elbe ; † January 24, 1789 in Ludwigslust ) was a German singer ( tenor ), composer and court conductor .
Life
Carl August Friedrich Westenholz was a son of the organist Casimir Albrecht Heinrich Westenholz and a younger brother of Johann Friedrich Gottlieb Westenholz (1727–1796), from 1775 organist of the Jakobikirche (Lübeck) . He came to the court of Duke Friedrich von Mecklenburg-Schwerin as a pupil of Adolf Karl Kunzen ; from 1756 he was employed as a singer (tenor). In 1767 he became concertmaster and director of the court orchestra in Ludwigslust, and from 1770 he succeeded Johann Wilhelm Hertel as court conductor. As a composer he wrote sacred cantatas and oratorios , including the Christmas cantata The Shepherds at the Bethlehem Crib based on a libretto by Karl Wilhelm Ramler .
His first wife, Lucietta Affabili (1725–1776), whom he married in 1765, was an Italian soprano . In 1777 he married the singer Sophie Fritscher (1759-1838), who was also known as a pianist and composer of songs and piano pieces.
Of his children, Friedrich Carl (1756–1802), born out of wedlock, became a cellist and organist . The son Friedrich (1778–1840) became oboist at the Berlin court orchestra and composed concert symphonies , songs and piano music. The son Carl Ludwig Cornelius (1788-1854) became a violinist , pianist and composer.
