biography

Carl Büchsel was born as the son of Pastor Gotthilf Karl Friedrich Büchsel and Dorothea Luise Friederike Millies in Schönfeld in 1803 and attended the Prenzlau high school for schooling . After studying mathematics and theology in Berlin and ordination in 1829, he held the post of pastor in the Evangelical Church in Prussia until 1841, like his father and grandfather before him. He then went to Brüssow and worked there as superintendent until he was appointed pastor at the newly built St. Matthew's Church in Berlin in 1846 . In 1852 he was also consistorial councilor and a year later general superintendent of the Neumark and Niederlausitz area . In this role, he initially decidedly rejected the duel between Bismarck and Vinke. From 1858, in addition to his pastoral office, he also took over the management of the St. Elisabeth Hospital and Deaconess Mother House in Berlin and the Goßner Mission Society.

In 1865 the first volume of his work "Memories from the life of a country chaplain" was published, of which he wrote four more volumes until his death. The fifth and last was only published posthumously in 1897. In addition, Büchsel published a number of sermons and collections during his tenure. In 1884 he resigned from his position as pastor, and five years later he died in Berlin at the age of 86. He was buried in the Old St. Matthew Cemetery (Dept. C-001-020 / 021), which had been established during his tenure and under his direction.

In 1984, the Berlin Senate decided to dedicate the last resting place of Carl Büchsel for twenty years as the grave of honor for the State of Berlin . After this deadline, the Senate decided in November 2005 not to extend the dedication.

family

Carl Büchsel was married to Henriette Caroline Ernestine Simonetti (1806–1888), with whom he had a total of eleven children, including their son Johannes Büchsel, born in 1849 .
