Carl Ludwig Wilhelm Baermann (born October 24, 1811 in Munich ; † May 24, 1885 in Munich) was a German clarinet and basset horn virtuoso .

Life

Baermann was the son of the clarinetist Heinrich Joseph Baermann and the singer Helene Harlaß (1785–1818); he had four siblings. Helene Harlas had previously been married to the Bavarian civil servant Joseph von Geiger. Carl Baermann married Barbara Schmitz and they had eight children.

Baermann was trained musically by his father and was a member of the Munich court orchestra from 1825 as an apprentice and from 1832 onwards, where he played the basset horn and followed his father in the position of solo clarinetist in 1847 . He accompanied his father on four concert tours, and the two triumphed as a father-and-son duo with, among other things, Carl's Duo concertant op. 33 in 1839 in Paris, where they stayed with their friend Giacomo Meyerbeer .

He developed his complete clarinet school while teaching at the Royal Music School , it appeared in five volumes from 1867 in Offenbach . With the instrument maker Georg Ottensteiner he patented in 1860 a clarinet model that the promise of the Brahms clarinet Richard Mühlfeld found. When he retired as solo clarinetist, he was appointed Bavarian professor . Carl Baermann's work has 87 opus numbers .

His son Karl Baermann (1839–1913) was a student of Peter Cornelius and Franz Lachner and a friend of Franz Liszt . He was employed as a piano teacher at the Munich Music School before he moved to Boston in 1881 . His uncle Carl Baermann (1782–1842) was a bassoonist in Potsdam.

Great duet for steamed noodle or cream strudel, clarinet and basset horn

Heinrich and Carl Baermann stopped in Berlin on a two-year concert tour on the way to St. Petersburg and agreed to visit Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's house on December 30, 1832 , Baermann and Mendelssohn Bartholdy had also met in Berlin in 1827. Father and son Baermann were supposed to provide a dish with steamed noodles and cream strudel in the stately kitchen of the Mendelssohns , which Mendelssohn had been craving since a visit to Baermann in Munich. Mendelssohn, for his part, would meanwhile fulfill a composition commission for Heinrich Baermann that had been promised for a long time. The result was a concert piece for clarinet, basset horn and piano op. 113, which could already be rehearsed that evening with Mendelssohn at the piano. Because of their success, the three repeated the cooking and composing action for a second concert piece, Concert Piece for Clarinet, Basset Horn and Orchestra No. 2, op.114 a few days later.Mendelssohn orchestrated his first composition, Carl Baermann wrote the orchestral version for the second.
