Carl Vilhelm Balsgaard (* December 24, 1812 in Copenhagen , † August 14, 1893 there ) was a Danish porcelain , vedute , genre , portrait and still life painter , inspector of the private collection of paintings of the Danish King Christian IX. as well as private tutor of his wife Louise .

Balsgaard, son of lottery assistant and auditor Hans Balsgaard and his wife Anna Dorothea, nee Weinreich, studied painting at the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen, where he trained in figure painting. In 1841 he won a small silver medal there for a nude drawing . Since 1835, however, he devoted himself increasingly to painting flowers and still life in order to secure his livelihood. He was also active in porcelain painting . In 1843 he married Anna Margrete Hirth († 1868). In 1848/1849 he lived in Gothenburg , Sweden. With a travel grant that he had received in 1855, he traveled to Berlin , Dresden , Düsseldorf and Paris . He stayed in Düsseldorf between 1855 and 1856. On July 5, 1858 he became a member of the Royal Danish Academy of Art. In 1862 he visited London . Christian IX appointed him in 1864. inspector of his private painting collection (today Statens Museum for Kunst ). In 1867 he received the title of professor . In 1872/1873 he traveled to Italy . In 1892 he was made a knight of the Order of Dannebrog . Balsgaard's grave is on Solbjerg Parkkirkegård in Frederiksberg-Solbjerg .
