Carl Christoph Traugott Tauchnitz (born October 29, 1761 in Großbardau ; † January 14, 1836 in Leipzig ; alternatively also: Karl ) was a German printer and publisher , who was best known for his inexpensive books in the collection of Greek and Latin classics .

Life

Tauchnitz was born the son of a teacher . His desire for a study could be due to the economic situation of the family do not realize. In 1777 Tauchnitz became an apprentice to the printer Sommer in Leipzig. Later he also learned from the typographer and woodcutter Unger in Berlin .

In 1796, Tauchnitz founded his own company . In 1800 a type foundry was added to the printing company and soon afterwards the publishing bookshop . Tauchnitz 'ventures were economically successful. He died in Leipzig in 1836 and left the company to his son Carl Christian Philipp Tauchnitz (1798–1884), who continued to run it for a few years, but gradually sold it from 1844 to 1865.
