Carl Friedrich Jacob Zincken

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Carl Friedrich Jacob Zincken (born July 19, 1814 in Blankenburg , † February 4, 1894 in Leipzig ) was a German metallurgist. He was foreman in Anhalt-Bernburg (Mägdesprung and Bernburg) until 1858, then civil engineer in Halle (Saale) . and Leipzig. Basic work on the lignite made him as famous as his discovery of a tertiary horseshoe crab ( Tachypleus decheni Z.) and the name of the Minerals Kainit .

Live and act

Zincken was the first child from the marriage of the Brunswick mountain auditor and later Anhalt Oberbergrats Johann Ludwig Carl Zincken with the pastor's daughter Auguste Friederike Wilhelmine Schleiter from Lauterberg in the Harz Mountains . At his baptism on August 9, 1814 in Blankenburg, the following were present as sponsors:

  • Secret Finance Council of the Prussian King , Israel Jacobson
  • Grandfather Pastor Schleiter from Lauterberg
  • Grandmother Councilor Zincken from Berlin
  • Great-grandfather Captain Harten from Wedderstedt.

The family moved to Mägdesprung , where the father took up his position on January 1, 1821 as director of the Anhalt-Bernburg mining and steel works.

Carl Zincken graduated from the Carolinum Bernburg high school in order to then study at the Collegium Carolinum in Braunschweig . Returning to Mägdesprung, he received an apprenticeship as an ironworker under the strict supervision of his father . In 1835 he was appointed ironworks clerk by the student and in 1840 he was made foreman. In the same year the Natural Science Association of the Harz accepted him as a member. He constructed a 4 HP balancing steam engine for use in distilleries. In 1841 he got a business trip to Wasseralfingen to learn about smelting and refining with blast furnace gases with Adolf von Faber du Faur ( Bunsen analyzed blast furnace gases in 1837/38 with reference to possible uses; Faber du Faur undertook his first practical experiments). On his return, he took over the construction management for a gas flame oven , a puddle oven and a tongs .

In 1843 Zincken moved to Bernburg, where he took over the management of the iron foundry founded in 1839. In the revolutionary turmoil of 1848–1849 , father and son Zincken were the target of defamation and violent accusations. Zincken jun. thereupon demanded the deputy von Gloß for pistols because he had publicly insulted him and his father, but the duel did not take place . In 1850, the state parliament determined that Zincken jun. was wrongly accused. In 1854 he took over the management of the Mägdesprung mechanical engineering company. In 1858 he was "dismissed from the ducal state service by the highest resolution at his most insubordinate request while retaining his title."

From now on he worked as a civil engineer. After a short, hapless interlude at the ducal iron foundry and machine factory in Köthen, he went to Halle / S. and finally in 1871 to Leipzig.

Zincken was apparently a consultant for lignite companies. He drove to central German lignite mines , worked in the archives of the mining authorities and published articles and lectures. His books summarized the knowledge of fossil fuels of his time . Zincken was also paleontologically educated and collected fossils. He succeeded in finding a tertiary horseshoe crab and discovering several tertiary mollusks . He dealt with the composition of the salts that occurred in the first potash mines near Staßfurt and named a new mineral as kainite .

In 1853 he became a member of the Natural Science Association for Saxony a . Thuringia and took an active part in club life in Halle . In Leipzig he published after 1880, presumably inspired by family connections, mainly in a Viennese journal. Zincken died unmarried in Leipzig in 1894. The grave site no longer exists.

There is no necrology in the specialist journals. A brief note of his demise appeared in the Journal of Practical Geology in 1894 on page 112.

In the literature (for example in the Catalog of Scientific Papers , London) there was repeated confusion between the authors JCL Zincken (Zincken sen.) And CF Zincken (Zincken jun.), Caused by missing or incorrect information on first names. Since members of the Zincken clan have also published, there is a high risk of confusion with abbreviated names.

In his honor Oswald Heer named the Triassic insect Chauliodites zinkeni HEER, 1864, which Carl Zincken had found in the red sandstone of Gödewitz near Salzmünde .
