Carl Georg Köster
Carl Georg Köster , also Karl Georg Koester (born February 13, 1812 in Hamburg , † March 3, 1893 in Düsseldorf ) was a German landscape painter who worked in Bremen , Hamburg and Düsseldorf.
Life
Born in Hamburg, Köster turned to a career as an artist after unsatisfactory beginnings in his father's business and studied at the academies in Leipzig , Dresden and Munich from 1836 . He practiced his profession as a painter for the longest time in Bremen : from 1845 to 1884 he painted and drew views and landscapes from the north German landscape , but also motifs from the Alps . They are seldom so precisely located as the bridge over the Dobbengraben in the Focke Museum in Bremen. In 1884 he moved to Düsseldorf via Hamburg, where his son Paul also worked as a landscape painter. Georg Köster died there on March 3, 1893.
Like many of his painting contemporaries, Köster was not unimpressed by the Dutch landscape painters of the 17th century; Echoes of Jan van Goyen and others are recognizable, but he does not adopt their tonal colors. Occasionally his landscapes are decorated with miniature figure staffage. He signed with “C. G. Köster "or" G. Köster ”.
The Focke-Museum Bremen owns six, the Kunsthalle Bremen , where he exhibited in 1843 and 1849, five of his paintings.
