Carl Heinrich Wrangel , Freiherr zu Adinal ( Swedish Carl Henrik formerly Wrangel af Adinal ; also Wrangell ; born January 28, 1681 in Hapsal ; March 23, 1755 in Sperlingsholm) was a Swedish field marshal .

Life

Origin and family

Carl Heinrich was a member of the Swedish line of the barons Wrangel af Adinal of the Baltic noble family von Wrangel . His parents were the Swedish captain Reinhold Wrangel, Freiherr zu Adinal († 1686) and Anna Margaretha, née von Zoege († 1693).

He married in 1718 in Moscow with Märta Helena Countess Horn af Rantzien (1690–1777), a daughter of the Swedish general and Imperial Councilor Henning Rudolf Horn (1651–1730). The marriage resulted in three daughters and four sons, including the Swedish governor, general and envoy Georg Gustav von Wrangel (1728–1795).

Career

Wrangel joined the Swedish army at the age of 15 and participated in several campaigns by Charles XII. part. During this time he was promoted to captain of the Livguard and later to lieutenant colonel . In the Battle of Poltava he was taken prisoner by the Russians . After his return he rose to colonel in 1722 and major general in 1732 . Also in 1732 he became governor of the province of Ostrobothnia for about a year . The appointment to the Imperial Council , which was proposed to him in 1739, he refused "to stay with the army and the war".

As early as 1731 he was introduced to the baron class of the Swedish knighthood (sup. No. 199).

When the Russo-Swedish War broke out, he led a corps of around 4,000 men in Finland under the command of Henrik Magnus Buddenbrock . In 1742 he was promoted to lieutenant general and in 1754 to field marshal .

He was hereditary lord on estates Sontack, Urbs , Erwita in Estonia and on Sperlingsholm near Halmstad , which he had acquired in 1748 from George Bogislaus Staël von Holstein and on Kymenegård in Finland.

Wrangel was buried with his wife in Saint Nikolai Church in Halmstad.
