Carl Jänig , also Karl Jänig or Karel Jaenig , (born March 5, 1835 in Zirnetschlag , South Bohemia , † October 6, 1914 in Prague ) was a Bohemian Catholic prelate .

Live and act

After studying philosophy and theology in Prague, Carl Jänig was ordained priest for the Archdiocese of Prague in 1858 . From 1858 to 1862 he worked as a chaplain in Wildstein and Graslitz . In 1863 he was sent by Cardinal Friedrich zu Schwarzenberg to Rome for higher studies in church history and Christian archeology, from which he graduated in 1865 as a doctor of canon law. Since 1862 he was a chaplain of the priestly college of the Anima. After his return from Rome he was appointed to the Prague Archbishop's Consistory and was secretary of the ecclesiastical court from 1869.

Due to his extensive language skills, his diplomatic behavior and his experience in the field of church politics, Cardinal Schwarzenberg appointed him rector of the Campo Santo Teutonico , the prominent German-speaking priestly college in the Vatican and the historical arch brotherhood, in 1870 . In 1872 he was appointed Vice Rector and in 1875 Rector of the Collegio Teutonico di Santa Maria dell'Anima in Rome . He was appointed apostolic protonotary, prelate and received numerous awards and was considered a reference person for the Roman Curia with the Czech, Austrian and German episcopate. In 1887, however, he was removed from office by the Austrian Emperor. In 1889 he returned to Prague and became administrator of St. John of Nepomuk on the Rock .

He took part in the renovation of the Agnes Monastery in Prague , the church and monastery of St. Peter and Paul in the Upper Silesian city ​​of Neisse , the Prague churches of Our Lady of the Snow and St. Nepomuk on the Rock, as well as chapels in Motol , Suchdol , Rožmitál and Budweis . He used Josef Antonín Hůlka , Bishop of Budweis, for his extensive estate from the library, a collection of paintings and a literary estate . Jaenig's correspondence with the books was kept in Strahov Monastery .
