Carl Rimann (born March 1, 1870 in Breslau , † after March 1947) was a German garden architect and specialist writer .

Life

From 1889 Carl Rimann completed an apprenticeship as a gardener at the Wroclaw Botanical Garden . During his visit to the fruit growing and horticultural college in Proskau , he already distinguished himself with good illustrations for several scientific works by well-known authors. Rimann then worked as a gardening assistant and technician in various positions in Kronberg im Taunus and Frankfurt am Main and successfully participated in various horticultural competitions.

From 1984 to 1901 Rimann worked in the Palmengarten in Frankfurt . Afterwards he was head gardener and manager of a large private garden in Vienna- Döbling for three years . In 1904 he passed the examination as a state-certified head gardener . From 1904 to 1906 he was in charge of the palace gardens and the nursery of Count Nákó Sándor in Nagyszentmiklós, then Hungary (now Romania). Rimann held a comparable position for a few years near Frankfurt am Main, "where he also made himself particularly well known as an extremely skilled nursery and jewelry gardener".

As a result of his "versatile experience in all areas of horticulture", he was appointed to the teaching institute for fruit and horticulture in Proskau in 1908. Until 1912 he taught garden art and technology there along with the associated minor subjects. In addition to study trips, he also successfully took part in horticultural competitions at this time. In particular, he won first prize for his design for a public park in Lankwitz (a district of Berlin since 1920), today's Lankwitz Community Park (opened as Beyendorffpark on September 2, 1911 , named after the Lankwitz mayor Rudolf Beyendorff ), when it was implemented (1910–1912) he held the catenary.

On March 1, 1912 Rimann resigned as senior landscape architect landscape gardening grains & Brodersen (see Albert Brodersen ) in Berlin-Steglitz one whose interests he in 1917, after the death of the joint proprietor Gustav grains was. Numerous gardens were created up to Rimann's retirement from business life in 1937. During the 20 years of co-ownership, he was “always at the forefront” of the landscape gardening professional organization. He also held some honorary positions.

Reviews

Guido Harbers wrote in his book review on Die Praxis der Gartentechnik in the supplement to the Baumeister in June 1937: “This first edition of this manual for garden technology, written by an experienced garden technician at the suggestion of the well-known garden publisher Parey, Berlin, has become well established and is now available after 9 years in the second edition. The author deliberately refrains from theoretical or aesthetic treatises. For this he reveals the whole treasure of his 35 years of practical experience in this book. In addition to the chapters on the actual treatment and care of the plant, the first part of the book (Chapters I with VI), in which he develops the more terrain-related tasks, appears to us to be particularly useful: terrain surveys and plan transfer, earthmoving, soil cultivation and soil improvement, construction of paths and squares, drainage and irrigation, water systems and finally the terrace, stone and rock structures. "

In 1940, on the occasion of Rimann's 70th birthday, Max Weber wrote in Gartenkunst magazine : “Even if Rimann's name has appeared as a valued collaborator in the horticultural press since 1895, his literary works have their crowning glory in the work that is now in its second edition 'The practice of garden technology' found. This book reveals in all parts the most thorough training to the professional who is enthusiastic about his profession. "
