The booksellers Richard Quelle (1870–1926) and Heinrich Meyer (1875–1947) founded the Quelle & Meyer publishing house on July 1, 1906 in Leipzig. The publishing house expanded rapidly, to which Otto Schmeil's natural science teaching work made a particular contribution, which should reach a total circulation of 25 million copies. In 1914 the publisher's directory showed over 600 book titles and seven magazines. The authors included such well-known personalities as the theologians Paul Feine and Ernst Sellin , the philosopher Rudolf Eucken , the psychologists Hans Prinzhorn and William Stern , the pedagogues Theodor Litt and Eduard Spranger , the literary scholars Oskar Walzel and Friedrich von der Leyen , the political scientist Gustav Radbruch , the historian Erich Brandenburg and the biologists Paul Brohmer and Jost Fitschen .

Richard Quelle died in 1926. Heinrich Meyer left the company in 1934, after which Otto Schmeil's son Werner Schmeil (1896–1968) took over the publishing house as sole managing director. He had been a partner since 1918 and consistently expanded the publishing program; including school, study and non-fiction books in the fields of theology , philosophy , psychology , pedagogy , linguistics and literary studies , history , music and art , law and political science , economics and natural sciences . In addition, various magazines were founded or taken over, such as the educational periodicals Die Erziehungs (1925–1943) and Kindergarten (1933–1938). 25 years after the publishing house was founded, the publisher's catalog listed over 2,500 available titles.

The publishing house was destroyed in an air raid on Leipzig on December 4, 1943 . Because after the end of the war a new start in the private sector in the Soviet occupation zone was no longer possible, Schmeil moved with the publishing house to Heidelberg in his father's house on Schloss-Wolfsbrunnenweg . The existing priorities were expanded further. Quelle & Meyer was a co-founder of the Uni-Taschenbücher (UTB) working group in 1970 and remained part of this group until 2002. The biological workbooks series , which appeared in 57 volumes from 1958–1999, stands out among the scientific works .

After Werner Schmeil's death in May 1968, the publishing house was taken over by Walter Kißling. From 1984 Gerhard Stahl and Günther Fertig from Wiesbaden were the managing directors. Stahl has been the sole publisher since 1992.

Quelle & Meyer has formed a publishing association with Limpert and Aula since 1993 , but is still an independent company. In 1999 the publishing house was relocated to Wiebelsheim in the Hunsrück .

Since the 1990s, books on zoological and botanical topics have dominated the program. This was expanded in 1997 to include hunting and forestry; Among other things, the rights for the textbook Die Jägerprüfung from Richard Blase were acquired.

In 2004 Quelle & Meyer bought the Goldschneck publishing house and expanded the program to include paleontological titles and the journal Fossilien .

Archives of the publishing house are now in the Saxon State Archives , Department State Archives Leipzig .

Publishing program

Books and authors

Quelle & Meyer has been based in Wiebelsheim in the Hunsrück since 1999

The focus of the publishing program is natural history books and biological identification literature for school, study and practice, as well as publications on nature conservation and conservation, hunting and forestry, as well as geological topics. Well-known authors of the past with updated standard works that are still available include Otto Schmeil , Jost Fitschen and Paul Brohmer . The botanical identification book Die Flora Deutschlands , also known as " Schmeil-Fitschen " after its first two authors , is now in its 97th edition (2019). Fitschen's wood flora , first published in 1920, is still being published (12th edition 2007). The zoological identification book Fauna von Deutschland , published by Brohmer in 1914 in addition to “Schmeil-Fitschen”, is also still part of the publishing program, and has now been re-edited by the Göttingen ecologist Matthias Schaefer in its 23rd edition (2010).

Current authors include the biologists Heiko Bellmann , Dietrich Böhlmann, Ruprecht Düll , Dieter Glandt , Ulrich Hecker, Bruno P. Kremer, Herfried Kutzelnigg and Rita Lüder as well as the nature photographer Wolfgang Willner.

Some of them have published volumes in the publisher's two main series. The “Basic Course” series is used to identify plants, fungi and animals. In addition to this, there is a “pocket dictionary” series in which animals or plants in a certain area are presented in detail according to their species. Due to their handy format, these books are often used as excursion guides .

The botanical specialist book program is supplemented by the series Botanical Hikes , which is characterized by the combination of hiking and plant guides for biotopes in a limited geographical area.

Since the takeover of Goldschneck Verlag with its palaeontological program, this area has also been expanded. In addition to various individual titles on fossils, the series forays through geological history published by Gunnar Meyenburg has existed since 2009 , in which German regions with their geological features and geologically important natural monuments are presented.

The textbook Die Jägerprüfung by the late veterinarian Richard Blase is now available in its 30th edition (2010) and is known as the "Bladder". It is regarded as the standard work to prepare for the hunter examination in Germany.

The Quelle & Meyer program is rounded off by successful backlist titles from the fields of psychology and education. The program also includes the book Die Form der Wissenschaftlichen Arbeit by Ewald Standop and Matthias Meyer, one of the most successful and long-lasting scientific working aids in German. The title, first published in 1955, is now available in an updated 18th edition (2008).
