Carl Schumann (born December 5, 1827 in Esslingen , † April 29, 1898 in Vienna ) was an Austrian architect .

Carl Schumann studied architecture at the Stuttgart Polytechnic from 1844 . On February 2, 1847, he was one of the founders of the Stauffia Association, later the Stauffia Corps . After completing his studies, he went to Vienna in 1850. In Ludwig von Förster's construction office , he carried out the first independent planning, of which the synagogues in Budapest and Timisoara and the administrative building of the Danube Steamship Company in Budapest should be mentioned.

From 1857 to 1869 he headed the structural engineering department of the Austro-Hungarian State Railroad Company. During this time he carried out the construction of the Vienna State Railway Station, also known as the Ostbahnhof, as well as the construction of some official buildings and numerous rental houses. In many of these works he worked with Wilhelm von Flattich .

In 1869 he switched to the Vienna Construction Company as construction director and managing director, and he managed their business until 1898. In 1873 he was also appointed to the company's board of directors. There he worked with the architects Ludwig Tischler and Theodor Bach . In addition to planning various hotels, especially for the World Exhibition in Vienna in 1873 , the company concentrated on the planning and construction of prestigious rental houses in the inner city area of ​​Vienna. More than one hundred houses were built by the company under the leadership of Schumann, which still shape the cityscape of Vienna today. Some of them are included in the list of listed objects in Vienna's 1st district, Inner City .

Through his involvement in numerous boards of directors and commissions, Schumann was one of the most important personalities in Viennese society.
