Carl Sentance (born June 28, 1961 in Cardiff , Wales ) is a British rock singer .

biography

At the age of 14 he started making music with his first band, Leading Star , where he played guitar and sang from 1975 to 1978. After performing in several local bands, he replaced John Deverill as singer in the NWoBHM band Persian Risk in 1980 . 1983 landed the band with the song Ridin 'High , released under the NWoBHM record label Neat Records , their first hit. In 1984 Phil Campbell left the band to join Motörhead . In 1984 Persian Risk toured Great Britain with Motörhead and appeared on English television, in 1986 the first album Rise up was released .

In the same year, Carl Sentance received the offer to tour Europe with Tokyo Blade as opening act for Blue Öyster Cult . The tour was successful, and Sentance received an offer from manager Smallwood Tailor to join Geezer Butler as lead singer in his solo project Geezer Butler Band . The collaboration lasted from 1986 to 1988 and demo songs, videos and various bootlegs were created, but no record deal was concluded. In 1989 Geezer Butler joined Ozzy Osbourne and the band broke up. Sentance left the Geezer Butler Band in 1988 to join the Welsh band Monroe, which had a record deal with a label in Germany.

His time at Monroe was very short, after three months and demo recordings, Carl returned to Cardiff and formed the band Tokio Rose there. Despite a good time with Tokio Rose , Carl was still looking for the right band, which led him to Florida, USA, to the band project Ghost of the Welsh ex- UFO guitarist Paul Chapman in 1989, after, among other things, an unsuccessful audition for Marillion . brought. From 1990 to 1992 demo songs and videos were created, but the musical trend in the USA in the early 1990s was primarily grunge , and again no record deal was made. Carl tried to build on the success of Persian Risk and founded the band Persian Risk USA in Orlando, Florida in 1992. But the time and place did not seem to be right for this band either.

In 1995, Carl had to return to the UK due to management and immigration problems. From 1995 to 1999 he sang leading roles in various musicals, such as E.g. Judas in Jesus Christ Super Star or Sky in Guys and Dolls .

In 1999, he became the lead singer of the Swiss hard rock band Krokus , with whom he in the same year the album Round 13 took up and completed several concert appearances, including at the prestigious German heavy metal festival Bang Your Head , Wacken Open Air , and as the opening act for AC / DC in their Concert in Basel . In 2002, however, Mark Storace returned to Krokus as a front man. In 2005 and 2006 Carl Sentance took part in the Whole Lotta Metal Tour , and sang on the CD Dinosaurs (2006) of Power Projekt , a project by Dio and Black Sabbath drummer Vinny Appice , bassist Jeff Pilson and guitarist Carlos Cavazo .

In 2006 the Deep Purple keyboarder Don Airey asked him if he was interested in being the lead singer of his solo project Don Airey and friends at concerts in Austria. The two harmonized well, which can be seen in the joint writing of two songs for Don Airey's second solo album A Light in the Sky (2007: Shoting Star, Endless Night ) and Don Airey's participation in seven songs from Carl Sentance's first solo album Mind Doctor (2008/2009 ) is reflected. In addition to Don Airey on keyboards, Carl worked on his solo CD with musicians Harry James (drums) and Chris Childs (bass) from Thunder . Carl Sentance lost his voice during the recording of Mind Doctor , but thanks to speech therapy and singing lessons it returned completely after a year and the recordings for the first solo album could be completed. Mind Doctor received positive reviews from critics. The collaboration with Don Airey continued productively, Don Airey and friends toured Europe with A Light in the Sky in 2009, Don Airey's third solo LP All out was released in 2011 , on which Carl Sentance was the songwriter and lead singer on five songs ( The Way I feel Inside, People In Your Head, Running from the Shadows, Wrath of Thor, Tobruk ). Don Airey's fourth solo album Keyed Up , on which Carl Sentance contributed to six songs as a songwriter and singer ( 3 in the Morning, Beat the Retreat, Solomons Song, Claire d'Loon, Flight of Inspiration, Grace ) was released in February 2014.

Parallel to his collaboration with Don Airey and Friends , Carl has been performing the rock cover show The Classic Rock Show since 2012 .

The success with Persian Risk in the early 1980s and the thought of what would have become of the band if they had stayed together led Carl Sentance to decide to revive the band in 2012. After the former band members of the original band could not be won over for a second attempt, he found new musicians for the new edition of Persian Risk in Howie G. (guitar), Jason Banks (guitar), Wayne Banks (bass) and Tim Brown (drums) . In autumn 2012, the record Once a King was released , which was very well received by the critics. For example, she won the December 2012 soundcheck of the Powermetal.de webzine. In 2014 the album Who Am I foiled .

In 2015 he became the new singer of the band Nazareth . He succeeded Linton Osborn, who took over the microphone from founding member Dan McCafferty in 2014 . The album Tattooed on My Brain was released in 2018 via Frontiers Music .
