Carl Theodor Plessing (born March 22, 1856 in Lübeck ; † September 8, 1929 there ) was a German journalist, politician and Bavarian consul general.

Life

Carl Theodor Plessing was the son of Senator Wilhelm Plessing . After visiting the Katharineum , he completed a commercial apprenticeship in the then world-famous wine company " H. Behncke " in Lübeck.

After completing his military service as a one-year volunteer with the 2nd Guards Regiment on foot in Berlin , he went abroad for several years. There he was attached to the German consulate general in Bordeaux as a young lieutenant in the guards . Later he got to know Russia . Back in Lübeck he acquired the old Lübeck wine company "W. Stolterfoht ". This was a royal Bavarian purveyor to the court . After his predecessor died in this post, he was promoted to "kgl. Bavarian Consul in Lübeck ”.

At the end of 1891 Carl Theodor Plessing was awarded the Order of Saint Michael (4th grade) by the Bavarian Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria . On November 7, 1910, the royal Bavarian consul was promoted to his consul general. He had been promoted to reserve officer in his regiment . As such, he had the pleasure of being a member of the flag company several times. This traditionally brought the flags of the guard regiments into the emperor's palace after the spring and autumn parades.

Until the war he managed his Mori estate near Fackenburg . He headed several family foundations, including those of the " Jenisch'schen Freischule ", the Zöllner-Stift and others.

In the Vaterstädtischen Blätter , Plessing has been a lively employee since it was founded by the director of Lübeckische Werbung , Wilhelm Dahms , in 1896. He signed his articles with a "P." A large part of the series of articles from Lübeck originals, which received great attention at the time, came from him . He also described his personal experiences with great music artists, such as Brahms - whom he often visited in Vienna -, Rubinstein , Dvořák and others in the columns of the father city papers and Lübeck advertisements .

After the mobilization , during which he worked as a horse evacuation commissioner in Lübeck, Captain Plessing , almost 60 years old, rejoined the army as a volunteer officer at the head of ten members of his immediate family . First he was in the replacement battalion of his old regiment before he was assigned to the active regiment as a company commander . In 1915 his journey took him to the theaters of war in Belgium and France. The Senate of the Hanseatic City recognized his achievements on September 2, 1916 when he was awarded the Lübeck Hanseatic Cross . In the same year he was transferred to Russia for an inspection and shortly afterwards to a staff of the army department of General von Woyrsch . During the war he, who was the oldest officer in the field , born and resident in Lübeck, wrote several series of articles, such as: B. Colorful all kinds of things from Russia , loose sketches from the Eastern and Western fronts , across Russia to home for the Lübeck advertisements on the front. He distinguished himself particularly around the agricultural organization of " Oberost ". At the instigation of King Ludwig of Bavaria , he was attached to the staff of Crown Prince Rupprecht as the Bavarian consul . He owed the title of Bavarian Consul General to his economic and political activity in this post.

After the war he handed the Mori estate over to his son and moved to Mengstrasse 13.

After returning from a trip to the north of several months, Plessing died on September 9, 1929 after a brief illness. Shortly before, his travel impressions had been printed in the Lübeck advertisements . The Bavarian consulate building at Mengstrasse 15 raised its white and blue flag to half-mast on the death of the consul general .

Individual evidence

  1. In contemporary sources this was only referred to as Wilhelm. Probably the nickname. At KTG one calls z. B. only this one.
  2. The "K" in Karl's case was very likely a typographical error, since recent publications such as the Lübeck address book had written the fellow citizens with a "K".
