The son of a chair maker from Lübeck lived his whole life in the shadow of the Marienkirche . His cradle was on Fleischhauerstrasse , he spent his professional life on Königsstrasse and his family life was also on Fleischhauerstrasse .

At the age of 14, he joined the Borchers Brothers' printing works as an apprentice in 1874 , to which he would remain loyal throughout his life. After his apprenticeship he continued to work as an assistant while constantly improving his knowledge. After a few years he was appointed to manage subscription and advertising in the office .

The old address house at the corner of Königstrasse and Hundestrasse was abandoned in 1885 and the new one at Königstrasse 46 was moved into. Their business premises were enlarged by renovations and renovations and the land 44 and 46a were added.

In 1890 he was given the management of technical operations and, in connection with this, the reorganization of the printing company . As Johs. Geertz resigned from his position as senior manager after 16 years due to serious illness on July 1, 1890, Dahms took his place.

As the company's managing director and authorized signatory , he brought the Vaterstädtische Blätter into being.

The official gazette , the Lübeckische advertisements , which originally only offered the announcements of the senate and advertisements , became a respected and especially popular in trade circles daily newspaper with a daily morning and evening edition.

In his obituary in the Lübeckische Blätter in February 1939, the decline and dissolution of the company in the year of the seizure of power is mentioned. He turned down the management of a large foreign newspaper, which he was offered through the mediation of Senator Emil Possehl , out of love for his hometown.

Due to his professional position, it was possible for him to stand up for the local writing. In 1896 he founded the Vaterstädtische Blätter, which was added to the Lübeck advertisements every week . A large staff of experts stood by their side.

In addition, he published a large number of independent works in the field of local history . In 1896 he was one of those who founded the Association for the Promotion of Tourism in the year after the German-Nordic Trade and Industry Exhibition . Dahms was to be a member of the board for over 30 years. With his help, the German-Nordic Transport Association was established before the war and became the Lübeck Transport Association after the war .

He was a member of the house and landowner association , the Lübeck swimming club , the Lübeck art association and held a leading position in the trade association for several years. For more than ten years he was the chairman of the popular education evenings that often took place in the Reuterkrug in front of over 2000 visitors . This came to an end when the Reuterkrug burned down in 1904.

In 1901 he was elected to the Lübeck citizenship , to which he should belong for twelve years.

Dahms was elected to the church council of St. Marien , whose church choir he belonged from 1870 to 1874, in 1898. Since 1919 he has held its chairmanship and thus belonged to the Kirchentag, the later church council . As such, he unveiled the memorial of the Sankt Marien parish in the Marienkirchhof on the Sunday of the Dead in 1929 with the words:

May it bear witness forever that our race indelibly remembers the dear dead.

When the airship made an emergency landing near Echterdingen in 1908 , it was he who initiated the collection for a zeppelin donation in Germany. Senator Possehl was one of the first to provide him with 100,000 . Dahms personally brought the first proceeds from the collection to Count Zeppelin .

During the war he took care of the wounded and organized guided tours for them through the Hanseatic city several times a week . Over the years a management committee was established for this purpose, to which Dahms devoted itself to the end. He was awarded the Cross of Merit for War Aid in 1917.

Individual evidence

  1. congratulatory letter to the 25-jähirgen tenure from April 9, 1899
  2. If you read the last editions of the Lübeck advertisements before they were discontinued at the end of 1933, this happened as a surprise , as can be seen from various letters to the editor . It seems likely that the company as part of the DC circuit of the media on December 31, 1933 liquidated was.
