Carl Zumwinkel

Carl-Heinrich Zumwinkel (alternative spelling to Winkel ; * May 5, 1821 in Gütersloh ; † May 30, 1913 ibid) was a German doctor (without a doctorate) who was made an honorary citizen of his hometown Gütersloh in 1900 .

Zumwinkel grew up in modest circumstances and, according to his parents' wishes, was supposed to learn the bakery trade. Instead, he worked as an assistant to a Herford bath and barber who - as is quite common in these professions - also worked as a craft surgeon. Zumwinkel went on a hike and deepened his surgical knowledge at the anatomical seminar in Hamburg . From 1846 to 1847 he worked as a ship's doctor .

A new regulation of the training of medical assistants and doctors in Prussia, issued due to a lack of doctors, enabled Zumwinkel to train at the University of Greifswald . On August 30, 1850, he passed the state examination as a wound healer , obstetrician and general practitioner , whereupon he opened a practice in the Sundern farmers' association in Gütersloh . On October 24, 1854, Zumwinkel married Anna Bertelsmann, the daughter of the publisher Carl Bertelsmann .

Zumwinkel made particular merits during the German War in 1866 and the Franco-German War in 1870/71, when he gave medical care to wounded soldiers who had been transferred to Gütersloh. For his commitment he received the war memorial for non-combatants and was appointed district surgeon. In 1899 he was awarded the 3rd Class Red Cross Medal . For his 50th anniversary on August 12, 1900, the city of Gütersloh granted him honorary citizenship , and he was also appointed to the medical council. In 1910 he was awarded the 4th Class Red Eagle Order . Not far from the municipal clinic , the "Carl-Zumwinkel-Weg" was named after him.

On the grave inscription his name is given in the spelling "Carl-Heinrich zum Winkel".
