Carlos Camus

Carlos Marcio Camus Larenas (born January 14, 1927 in Valparaíso , † March 16, 2014 in Santiago de Chile ) was Bishop of Linares .

Life

Carlos Camus first studied chemical engineering at the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María and then entered the seminary of Santiago de Chile. He studied philosophy and Catholic theology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile and was ordained a priest on September 21, 1957 . He was active in pastoral care in the diocese of Valparaíso , especially in youth work and for the Catholic workers and the rural Catholic action .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on January 31, 1968 Bishop of Copiapó . The Archbishop ad personam of Valparaíso, Emilio Tagle Covarrubias , donated him episcopal ordination on March 3, 1968 ; Co- consecrators were José Manuel Santos Ascarza OCD , Bishop of Valdivia , and Carlos González Cruchaga , Bishop of Talca . His episcopal motto was La victoria que vence al mundo es nuestra Fe. ("The victory that overcomes the world is our faith.")

He held various positions in the Bishops 'Conference and CELAM and had several ad limina visits in 1979, 1984, 1989 and 1994. From 1974 to 1976 he was General Secretary of the Bishops' Conference of Chile. In 1975 he was Apostolic Administrator in the Diocese of Copiapó .

On December 11, 1976 he was by Paul VI. appointed Bishop of Linares and appointed to office on April 17, 1977. On January 17, 2003, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.

Carlos Camus was one of the strongest opponents of Colonia Dignidad , a totalitarian religious community founded by Germans abroad , which became known through human rights violations and criminal trials. He was a strong human rights advocate in Chile.
