Career
Club career
Carmelo Simeone began playing football at the Argentine capital club CA Vélez Sársfield , with whom he made his debut in the first team in the league of the Primera División in 1955 . For the middle class club at the time, he made 164 league games in the first Argentinian soccer league between 1955 and 1961. A goal he did not succeed. In 1961, the midfielder moved to the Boca Juniors , the most popular Argentine club next to River Plate . At the side of other top players of the time such as goalkeeper Antonio Roma , defender Silvio Marzolini and midfielder Antonio Rattín , Simeone won the Argentine soccer championship three times with Boca. In 1962, the team from the working-class La Boca took first place in the table with two points ahead of eternal rivals River Plate. After they had only finished third in the following season when they won the title of Independiente Avellaneda , they again triumphed in the Primera División in 1964 with eight points ahead of Independiente. The following season, the Boca Juniors were able to defend their title and thus secured the championship in 1965 with one point ahead of River Plate. This title win was the last for Carmelo Simeone during his time with the Boca Juniors. After two untitled years, the now thirty-four-year-old left the club in 1967 for the lower-class Club Sportivo Belgrano, where he ended his career the following year.
National team
Between 1959 and 1966 Carmelo Simeone was used six times in the Argentine national football team . In the first year of his national team time, he played the Copa America with the Argentine selection in his own country, which could be made victorious. Seven years later, Simeone took part in another major international tournament, the 1966 World Cup in England . In the tournament in the motherland of football, however, he was not used. His team reached the quarter-finals, in which, however, the eventual world champion and host England proved to be an insurmountable hurdle.
