Carolin Pook

Carolin Pook (* 1981 ) is a German improvisation musician ( violin , drums ) and composer who works in the fields of jazz and pop as well as classical music .

Pook comes from a musical family; her great-grandfather was the composer Waldemar von Bausznern (1866–1931), her father the pianist Rainer Pook, who was Herbert von Karajan's assistant for several years . She learned the violin at the age of six and drums at the age of twelve. Later she began to occupy herself with composition and the work of Arnold Schönberg , Gustav Mahler and Claude Debussy . From 2000 to 2006 he studied jazz violin and drums at the Cologne University of Music with Michael Gustorff and Keith Copeland ; her mentor was Werner Dickel , professor for viola and founding member of the Ensemble Modern , who introduced her to contemporary music . During this time, chamber music recordings were made by composers such as Thomas Beimel , Dietrich Eichmann and York Höller . Pook also studied with Zipflo Reinhardt (2000–2002) and Mark Feldman (2006–2008). After graduating, she received a scholarship to study in New York, where she has lived since 2006. With her formation the Pookestra, Pook cooperated with various musicians such as Christof Knoche and Pascal Niggenkemper ; the resulting album Herzkopf Dances contains a dance suite in four parts. In 2011 Pook wrote an orchestral composition for the Roy Hargrove Quintet and the German Radio Philharmonic and in 2012 a work for Peter Brötzmann and eight percussionists. As a musician and arranger she also worked with Kenny Garrett , Die Fantastischen Vier and Mike Doughty . In 2014 she was Artist in Residence of the Peter Kowald Society in Wuppertal; In 2015 she performed in a duo with Simon Rummel . In 2016 she worked as an improviser in residence in Moers.
