Casciano is a district ( fraction , Italian frazione ) of the municipality Murlo in the province of Siena , Tuscany region in Italy .

Casciano, also called Casciano di Murlo , Casciano di Vescovado or earlier Casciano delle Donne , is located approx. 5 kilometers west of the capital Murlo (or Vescovado) and approx. 15 kilometers south of the provincial capital Siena in the Merse Valley (Val di Merse). The place is in the Archdiocese of Siena-Colle di Val d'Elsa-Montalcino . Casciano is the most populous district of the municipality of Murlo and is 452 meters and had about 650 inhabitants in 2001. In 2017 there were 922 inhabitants. The closest places are Grotti and Ville di Corsano (municipality of Monteroni d'Arbia , approx. 5 kilometers north) and San Lorenzo a Merse (municipality of Monticiano, approx. 5 kilometers west).

history

The place was first mentioned in 1189 in a document from Pope Clement III. , who confirmed the rule of the church buildings in the area to the Bishop of Siena , Bono (Bishop of Siena 1189–1216). Later the place developed into the second capital of the municipality Murlo.

  • Santi Giusto e Clemente , church and pieve in the center. Was first a monastery for women in the 12th century , then the title was transferred to the church that was built in the 13th century. At that time the church was under the control of the Church in Doccia (Chiesa di Doccia). In 1344 the church was restored and expanded. The monastery was abandoned in 1463 and the goods were transferred to the Pieve. The church building was restored in 1525 and equipped with a rectory . The choir contains the fresco Madonna ei Santi Fabiano, Nicola da Bari, Rocco e Sebastiano (dated 1515) by Andrea di Niccolò , brought here from Santa Maria a Piantasala . The church was last restored in 1996.
  • Santa Maria a Piantasala , also called Cappella della Tagliata , chapel just outside Casciano. Made in 1514/1515.
